Record-breaking first leg outshines everything

Record-breaking first leg outshines everything

Last week’s first leg thrilled the entire football world. The two teams scored nine goals to set a new goal record in a Champions League semi-final game (since 1992/93). In the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, the predecessor of the competition, Eintracht Frankfurt and Glasgow Rangers netted nine times in a semi-final game in 1959/60.
Historically strong attacks go head-to-head
It wasn’t only in the first leg that PSG and Bayern were hungry for goals – they’ve netted numerous times throughout the season. For the first time, two clubs boasting more than 40 goals each in a single Champions League campaign face off, with PSG at 43 and FCB at 42 goals. However, Bayern needed two fewer games for that after Paris contested the play-offs. Bayern boast 3.23 goals scored per game, the highest average in the competition, with PSG in second place on 2.87. Both teams have their sights set on the record for goals: FC Barcelona scored 45 goals in 1999/2000.
FCB have overturned four first-leg defeats

FCB have overturned four first-leg defeats

FC Bayern have lost 16 first legs of a knockout tie in the Champions League (since 1992/93). Munich advanced to the next round on four occasions, most recently in the 2023/24 round of 16 against Lazio (1-0 defeat away, 3-0 win in Munich).
Strong home record against PSG
Paris Saint-Germain have lost more away matches against Bayern than against any other team in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup and the Champions League. FCB have won five of their seven games, four of them by a margin of two or three goals. Munich have won their last two encounters with PSG at the Allianz Arena.
The Allianz Arena is a stronghold in the Champions League. FC Bayern have only lost one of their last 29 CL home matches and won all six of their matches in Munich this campaign!
Kane in top form

Kane in top form

Harry Kane handed Bayern the lead in the first leg. The Englishman has scored in all of his last five appearances in Champions League knockout games, equalling the club record set by Robert Lewandowski between 2016 and 2018. It was Kane’s 13th goal this campaign – only Lewandowski scored more goals (15) in a single CL campaign in 2019/20. Kane has scored the second-most goals this campaign, with Kylian Mbappé (15) topping the scoring charts.
