Anyone who knows Kompany soon realises that this man is not just a tactical genius. Not so long ago, he was a world-class defender and an empathetic leader on the pitch. He took his own story as a black man from a troubled neighbourhood and turned it into a message: one’s background is not a weakness, but a strength. That speech showed who is standing on the touchline: a great coach and a thoughtful person.

It’s precisely this attitude that his players sense. Kompany is loyal. He publicly defends his players, whilst offering clear and fair criticism behind closed doors. He stands by the team when the going gets tough, and takes a back seat for the sake of the group when things are going well. He offers praise without seeking the limelight. This spirit of togetherness is a principle he puts into practice.

After elimination from the Champions League last season against Paris Saint-Germain, he congratulated Luis Enrique, walked over to the supporters, applauded the fans and backroom staff, then disappeared into the dressing room. Typical. Respect for the opposition, respect for his own supporters, and a focus on the future. He said afterwards that he doesn’t “have the ability to stay disappointed for long”, and that he was “already very motivated for the next match and the new season”. That’s Kompany.
