FC Bayern will send out another signal of support for the Munich candidature for the Olympic and Paralympic Games on Friday night. Following the home match against 1. FC Union Berlin, the German record champions will illuminate their Allianz Arena in the colours of the German Olympic Sports Federation’s (DOSB) bid – black, green, red, blue and yellow. The DOSB will decide which national location to enter the race to host the games at its extraordinary general meeting on 26 September in Baden-Baden.
Herbert Hainer, president of FC Bayern: “Munich is bidding to host both the Olympic and Paralympic Games with a long-term vision: building on a rich sporting heritage, existing infrastructure and proven widespread public support. Sustainable Games not only create special moments, they strengthen Munich’s position as a sporting hub in the long term and provide a whole generation of young people with fresh inspiration. That is why FC Bayern wholeheartedly supports Munich’s bid. We are convinced that, as a host city, Munich offers the DOSB the best conditions and the greatest support for inspiring and forward-looking Games.”
Along with the Bavarian state capital, Berlin and the Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr region are bidding to host the Games. As an international city with a long sporting tradition, existing sports venues and an excellent infrastructure, Munich is an ideal location for sustainable, big sporting events. Many of the facilities that were built for the 1972 Olympics are still in use today. Furthermore, FC Bayern’s modern arenas like the Allianz Arena, BMW Park and SAP Garden would serve as venues in the event of the Games being staged. The level of support for the bid among the sports-loving population was demonstrated in a referendum on the Games last year, with a historic 66.4 percent voting yes in a record turnout of 42 percent.
FC Bayern – various campaigns for Olympic bid
FCB have already championed the bid in the heart of Bavaria. At the Bundesliga top-of-the-table clash against Borussia Dortmund last October, Hainer and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, together with politicians and Olympic athletes, pleaded for Munich as the location under the motto “United for Munich – OlympiJA!”. Similar campaigns have also taken place at FC Bayern Women and FC Bayern Basketball matches. On social media and in video campaigns, famous faces from the club such as Manuel Neuer, Lena Oberdorf, Andi Obst and Uli Hoeneß have promoted the bid.
