After 2-2 draw in Der Klassiker

Reaction to Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund – Joshua Kimmich: ‘We should’ve won’

Bayern had to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. “We had enough chances to score more goals,” said Konrad Laimer, who had opened the scoring at the Allianz Arena. However, BVB twice hit back to level, leaving the two teams tied on points at the top of the Bundesliga. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the Matchday 8 fixture.

Konrad Laimer: “We had enough chances to score more goals. I don’t think Dortmund really had more chances in the second half than the two goals they scored. I thought our second half was actually better than the first. We played better, moved the ball better and created a lot of chances. We just didn’t put them away today. That can happen sometimes. In the end, we conceded a goal in the 90th minute that we shouldn’t concede. You then end up with a 2-2 draw, which will definitely feel better for Dortmund than us.”

Jan-Christian Dreesen (CEO): “Obviously we would’ve liked to win. We need to be fair and say that Dortmund had some excellent chances in the first half. And with our three injuries, which I can’t say much about the severity yet, we were given an additional test. Nobody can complain that the Bundesliga isn’t entertaining. We saw a real fight in Der Klassiker today like we’ve not seen for a long time. We’re now tied on points together at the top. Why can’t there now be an exciting title race? I personally would prefer things to be boring, but that probably won’t be the case.”

Max Eberl (board member for sport): “When you break things down quite simply, we didn’t manage to score a third goal after going 2-1 up, even though it was definitely possible. We had lot of chances, especially after the equaliser. In my opinion, we played very well at the start of the second half. We conceded the equaliser but pretty quickly made it 2-1. The fact we haven’t won in the end we need to put a bit down to ourselves because we didn’t take our chances.”

Aaron Danks (assistant coach): “It’s mixed feeling. We’re very pleased with our performance, especially in the second half. We had good control of the game. Dortmund have a good defensive balance, but I think we found lots of ways today to create chances. Obviously we’re disappointed in the end that we didn’t win, but I can tell the players that the performance was spot on. We did a lot right and created the right moments.”

Joshua Kimmich: “I think this was our third draw. Today’s didn’t need to end like that. Especially when you see the game in the second half, I don’t think a draw is justified. But that’s sometimes the case in football. Dortmund didn’t give up and were in it till the end. At the end of the day, we need to take the point, even though we obviously should’ve won.”

Nathaniel Brown: “It’s obviously frustrating. We wanted to win here, especially at home. The first half wasn’t easy with the injuries. We had to find our feet again after that. But I think we performed really well in the second half. That’s how it is in football. Sometimes you have luck, sometimes you don’t, but we can still be pleased with our performance after the break.”

Reaction from Borussia Dortmund

Niko Kovač (head coach): “If you have 50 percent possession here in Munich, it means you’ve done a lot right. We didn’t allow them much. We obviously ended up under more pressure in the second half, but the team continued to believe in themselves even after going behind. We played with a back four today, trying to attack higher and follow Bayern’s runs, especially the full-backs who always come inside. The guys did a great job there. Coming back twice here in Munich isn’t easy, so I believe we’ve taken a deserved point today.”

Felix Nmecha (midfielder): “I think it was a good game from both teams. We had moments where we could’ve decided the game for us. It was sometimes a bit wild. It had a bit of everything. We gave our all and in the end feel more like we’ve gained a point than dropped two.”

Nico Schlotterbeck (defender): “I think we played a very decent game in the first half but unfortunately had that goal ruled out. We then got the reward in the second half. We pressed really well at times. Obviously you need to suffer against Bayern. Obviously they had their chances, like the penalty and hitting the post. But all in all, we did really well.”
