Atlético post-match reaction - Manuel Neuer: 'We always had an answer'

FC Bayern impressed at Atlético Madrid with a solid team performance on Tuesday night, showing character to overcome an intimidating atmosphere at the Estadio Metropolitano and earn a deserved 2-0 win in the Champions League. “We have great belief in our squad and in the players we have. I think we showed that over 90 minutes tonight,” summarised Konrad Laimer, who won the ‘Player of the Match’ award not only for his goal. Captain Manuel Neuer took a similar view: “That was total domination from the first to the 93rd minute. No matter what Atlético threw at us, we always had an answer to it.” fcbayern.com has compiled the rest of the post-match reaction for you.

Reaction to match at Atlético

Aaron Danks: “I’m very pleased with the team’s performance. The way we kept a clean sheet and created chances in attack was impressive. It’s difficult to pick out individual players; it was just a superb team performance. Lennart Karl’s performance was very good, with the bonus of a goal. We’re very pleased with Lenny. Dayot Upamecano’s performances are often underestimated. What he gives to the team, with his character and his personality and then his performances, is outstanding. We see it every day in training.”

Manuel Neuer: “I’d say that was total domination from the first to the 93rd minute. No matter what Atlético threw at us, we always had an answer to it. We’re over the moon, especially given that we’ve been a bit hit by injuries and what’s happened at FC Bayern recently. But we’ve stood up well together and given everything so that we could enjoy a team success like tonight. That shows that we always stick together as a group, stand together and can deal with anything. I think a few people doubted whether we could pass the test here against a good team. To give an answer like that is incredible.”

Konrad Laimer: “We went into the game and knew what we can do. A lot is written but we have great belief in our squad and in the players we have. I think we showed over 90 minutes tonight how we can and want to play football. In the end we could’ve even scored a few more goals. It’s a very deserved win here away to a good side. The three points certainly give us an added lift for the next match against Mainz and the weeks ahead.”

Reaction from the other side

Alexander Sørloth (Atlético Madrid): “Bayern are one of the best teams in the world. We defended well in the first half, had a few good counters and goalscoring opportunities. All that was lacking was the final ball. The first half was decent but we tired after the break. We lacked energy and Bayern struck. Obviously we would’ve liked to have got something, but we still have four matches left. Every time we go on the pitch, we want to win. We have to keep working hard, start picking up points and hope we can win our remaining matches.”
