FC Bayern Women are the new leaders in the FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga after winning 1-0 in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash at home to VfL Wolfsburg. After a goalless first half, Georgia Stanway's 84th-minute penalty clinched a vital three points for the Munich girls on Matchday 16 in front of a capacity crowd of 2,500 at the FC Bayern Campus.
The win sees Bayern overtake Wolfsburg at the summit on 43 points, one point ahead of the She-Wolves with six matches left of the season.
Damnjanović starts
Head coach Alexander Straus made one change from the team that started in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Arsenal at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final first leg, with Jovana Damnjanović replacing Lea Schüller up front.
Strong first half
The hosts started on the front foot and had their first sight of goal in the sixth minute from a corner, but centre-back Saki Kumagai's header was cleared by Dominique Janssen. In the 16th minute, Stanway had a go from a good 25 metres out but goalkeeper Merle Frohms was equal to it. Just three minutes later, the England international hit the crossbar with a powerful effort from the edge of the area. Bayern continued to dominate the game and had another big chance to take the lead in the 32nd minute. Sydney Lohmann rose highest to meet captain Lina Magull's corner, but Frohms managed to divert the ball onto the woodwork before Janssen cleared desperately off the line.
Even second period
The second half was a similar story to begin with, although the visitors had the first chance through Ewa Pajor, whose shot from close range was saved by Bayern keeper Maria Luisa Grohs. Immediately after that, Klara Bühl's deflected effort was parried by Frohms. The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute, when the referee pointed to the spot after a handball in the area by Lena Lattwein. Stanway didn't need a second invitation and buried the penalty to fire Bayern to the top of the table.
Trips to London and Meppen next
The games are coming thick and fast for the German record champions' women's team. In four days, Straus' side contest the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final away to Arsenal. With a narrow advantage from the first leg behind them, they'll be playing for a place in the final four at the Emirates Stadium in London on Wednesday night (kick-off 21:00 CEST). The following Sunday, it's back to Bundesliga business with a trip to SV Meppen (kick-off 13:00 CEST).
