FCB Women knocked out of DFB Cup
FC Bayern Women suffered a crushing defeat in the DFB Cup semi-finals, going down 5-0 against VfL Wolfsburg in front of a capacity crowd of 2,500 at the FC Bayern Campus on Saturday afternoon. With FCB president Herbert Hainer and board member Dr. Michael Diederich watching on, Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir opened the scoring for Wolfsburg in the 19th minute. An unfortunate Maria-Luisa Grohs own goal made it 2-0 shortly before the break. In the second half, Jónsdóttir (47'), Jule Brand (56') and Dominique Janssen (60') put the result beyond doubt.
Rall recalled
Head coach Alexander Straus made just one change to his team from the 2-0 win at SV Meppen in the Women's Bundesliga before the international break. Maximiliane Rall came in for Franziska Kett, who suffered a shoulder injury while in action for Germany's U19 side.
2-0 down at half-time
The Munich girls started well and created the early chances. In just the second minute, Rall played in Lea Schüller down the left flank, but the striker missed the target. The subsequent period was even with more possession for Bayern, but with 19 minutes on the clock Jónsdóttir gave the visitors the lead after being fed by Jill Roord. Schüller was a whisker away from equalising just five minutes later from Klara Bühl's corner. At the other end, Grohs made a good save to deny Svenja Huth another five minutes later. The home side remained a threat, such as when Sydney Lohmann dribbled through the whole VfL defence in the 37th minute but then fired wide of the goal. Wolfsburg had more luck just before half-time, when a header from Ewa Pajor bounced from the post onto the back of Grohs and into the net.
Three goals in second half
The second period began as the first ended. Jónsdóttir got a bit lucky to come away with the ball in a duel with Tuva Hansen and fired in the third goal. It got worse for Bayern as they were picking the ball out of their net again just nine minutes later after a shot from Brand. The She-Wolves added another soon after, when the referee pointed to the spot after a handball in the box by Hansen. Janssen confidently converted the spot-kick to make it 5-0. Despite the heavy margin, Bayern kept plugging away but that's how it finished.
Freiburg at home then Essen away
The German record champions' women's team are back in action next Saturday, 22 April, with a home fixture against SC Freiburg in the Women's Bundesliga. The Matchday 18 clash kicks off at 13:00 CEST at the FC Bayern Campus. The Munich girls then have a weekend off before visiting SGS Essen on Saturday 6 May, again kicking off at 13:00 CEST.
