New FC Bayern Women captain Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir has extended her contract with the club till 2026. The 28-year-old Iceland international and recently appointed club captain has been in Munich since summer 2021 and is a key part of coach Alexander Straus’s team.
Viggósdóttir: “I’m very happy”
Viggósdóttir was the only outfield player in the entire Bundesliga to play every minute of last season, playing a crucial role in Bayern’s title success. And that is hopefully just the start. “We’ve begun a really interesting and great process. It’s what I want to continue to be a part of. It’s fantastic that I can stay here for three more years. I’m very happy about it and would like to contribute as much as possible to the team,” the Icelander said.
“A very demanding environment”
Viggósdóttir, who was already the leader in defence and is now part of the captaincy trio with Sarah Zadrazil and Georgia Stanway, has a clear idea of how Bayern can continue to be successful. For her, it’s mainly the small things that you work on every day in training. “That’s the most important thing for me, that we go to training every try and try to do our work and become a better team. Then it will show in games and hopefully also lead to success in the end. It’s a demanding environment at Bayern, and I really like that. It’s about competition and we want to win. It’s a place I want to be.”
Rech and Straus “very, very pleased”
Viggósdóttir’s contract extension was of vital important to Bayern. Bianca Rech, the head of women’s football: “Glódís took on great responsibility for us in the last season, led from the front and played a huge part in our team’s success. She showed excellent performances and is very important for us, especially in defence. All in all, Glódís took another huge step in her development last year, and we’re very, very pleased we can continue to accompany her along in her development.”
Coach Straus was also full of praise: “We’re building a team at Bayern where there are lots of leaders. I think that’s very important. We want to have a team where our players can take on responsibility and not always have to be told what they should do but take on the responsibility in their own hands. Glódís is an important part of this process, together with many other players in our team. I believe there was a lot of interest in Glódís from abroad. But she’s decided to stay at Bayern. That’s a big statement for the club.”
