Sarah Zadrazil: ‘Still in our own hands’

“In the end it felt like a win. Now we’ve still got it in our own hands,” said Sarah Zadrazil after a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Roma on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. With an equaliser in the sixth minute of added time, the coach and the players first had to gather their thoughts before speaking of their relief at a point and still maintaining a chance of progressing to the knockout stage. “It was important for us not to lose so we have a final next week,” said coach Alexander Straus. Die Frauen also expressed criticism towards themselves. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the game.

Reaction to Roma vs. Bayern

Alexander Straus: “We had a huge chance to go ahead at 0-0, but Camelia Ceasar made a great save. We then gifted Roma the lead with a mistake. I didn’t like how we conceded the goals today. We controlled the game but didn’t manage to create big chances. I think the first equaliser was deserved. Added time was then crazy. We first gave away the draw again but then came back. We have to pay Roma great respect. They were really good today. It was important for us not to lose so we have a final next week.”

Sarah Zadrazil: “We didn’t start well and allowed Roma to play well. We had the game under control in the second half. We were pressing and scored a deserved equaliser. The fact we came back to score another equaliser after going behind again in added time says a lot about our mentality. At the moment we’re struggling in general to create chances and put them away. In the end it felt like a win. Now we’ve still got it in our own hands.”

Lea Schüller: “We’re pleased that we managed to get a draw and keep everything open for next week. We need to play there how we did in the final 10 minutes today. We mustered up the energy we lacked at the start. It’s just not enough when we only play like that at the end.”
