Unbridled joy as FC Bayern Women celebrate double

FC Bayern Women made history on Thursday with the team’s first domestic double by beating Werder Bremen 4-2 in the final of the DFB Cup. It came five days after the Munich Frauen wrapped up the Bundesliga title as Alexander Straus’s team celebrated their unprecedented success.

Bayern got on the road to victory early in front of the crowd of 45,146 in Cologne as Lea Schüller’s header opened the scoring after just six minutes. Carolin Simon doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark. Schüller responded to Bremen getting a goal back by hitting two more of her own in the second half. Larissa Mühlhaus’s free-kick in added time was a mere consolation as Bayern claimed the cup. “We won; I scored three times. I don’t know what to say. It was an amazing game,” said hat-trick hero Schüller after full-time.

Having claimed the Bundesliga for the third year in a row, Straus has now also brought the domestic cup to Munich. It’s the perfect farewell for the Norwegian, who’ll leave the club at the end of the season. “I’m very happy and incredibly proud. When we get the Meisterschale in our hands, it’ll definitely be very emotional. I can already sense that. The last three years were intense. We worked hard to get to this point. It’s a wonderful farewell for me. I’m leaving with the feeling that I’ve travelled a significant road, leaving behind some of my closest friends. But the journey isn’t over yet. We’ve still got two games left,” a proud Straus stated after the final.

It was a long and difficult road to the final in Cologne. A 6-0 win at Sand in the second round was followed by a tight 2-1 victory at Freiburg in the last 16. The quarter-final turned into a thriller that needed extra-time for Bayern to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1. Pernille Harder’s hat-trick flipped the semi-final on its head to win 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at home to Hoffenheim. Bayern then put in one final impressive display in Cologne to keep Bremen under control and secure a deserved victory.

Celebrating with friends and family

After a quick refuel with pizza in the changing room and a brief stop back at the hotel, the team arrived at their red-and-white decorated post-match event at 9pm to celebrate with their nearest and dearest who had travelled to Cologne on Thursday. They were now able to have fun together outside in the warm spring night before filling up the dancefloor inside for an unforgettable double celebration.
