7 June 2025 marks exactly 55 years since the creation of a women’s football team at Bayern, at a time when this was still banned by the German FA. Since that day in 1970, players from all over the world have represented FC Bayern Women and helped write the club’s history.
To mark the team’s 55-year anniversary, fcbayern.com is looking back on some of FC Bayern Women’s greatest moments. The header photo features the club’s first women’s team from 1970.
1970: Founding

It was on 7 June 1970, before the DFB lifted the official ban on women's football, that Bayern founded its first women's football section. The club took on a pioneering role early on and made a clear statement for the promotion and development of women's football in Germany.
1976: First title

Six years later, the continuous work of development finally paid off as the Munich Frauen were crowned national champions for the first time. Under the leadership of founding coach Fritz Bank, they beat Tennis Borussia Berlin 4-2 at the Leimbachstadion in Siegen. It was a victory that laid the foundations for a great era.
1972 to 2000: Perennial Bavarian champions and promotion

Bayern enjoyed prolonged regional success between 1972 and 1990, winning the Bavarian league title 19 years in a row. They also won eight Bavarian Cups. After Bundesliga relegation in 1993, the Munich women marked their 25th anniversary in 1995 (photo) and aimed for promotion again. Five years later, the time had come. “No more Bayernliga,” shouted the players after the final whistle of the decisive match in the promotion round. With 18 wins from 18 games, Bayern finished their perfect season in first place and were back promoted to the national top flight.
2012: First DFB Cup

The hard work of recent years was finally rewarded in 2012 as Bayern stunned favourites FFC Frankfurt in the final of the DFB Cup. Under Thomas Wörle, the team lifted their first domestic cup and brought the coveted trophy to Munich for the first time.
2015 and 2016: Champions again

Almost 40 years after they were first crowned champions of Germany, the time finally came again in 2015 as Bayern, coached by Wörle and captained by Melanie Behringer, secured back-to-back Bundesliga titles. It took Bayern back to the top of women’s football as they got to stand side by side with the men on the town hall balcony for the first time.
Since 2015: Champions League every year

Bayern have made it into at least the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Women’s Champions League every year since 2015, becoming a regular German representative on the European stage. The Munich Frauen have twice made it all the way to the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on the showpiece against Barcelona in 2019 and Chelsea in 2021.
2021 to 2024: Three titles in four years

Domestic success has also been a regular occurrence, with Bayern lifting the Bundesliga again in 2021, 2023 and 2024 to cement their status as one of Germany’s top sides in women’s football. It was Jens Scheuer who led the team to the first title, with Alexander Straus taking over for the 2022/23 triumph and beyond.
2024: Supercup

The Google Pixel Supercup was held for the first time in 27 years in 2024, pitting the defending Bundesliga champions against the reigning DFB Cup holders. Bayern prevailed 1-0 over Wolfsburg in Dresden to lift the trophy thanks to Klara Bühl’s goal.
2025: First double

More history was made over the next year as Bayern’s women won the domestic double for the first time. A 4-2 win in the cup final over Bremen crowned an almost perfect Bundesliga campaign, which made Bayern three-time defending champions. It was a season that once again underlined the impressive development of recent – and indeed the last 55 – years at the club.
