FC Bayern Women’s unbeaten record against Carl Zeiss Jena

FC Bayern Women boast the meanest attack and stingiest defence in the Google Pixel Bundesliga heading into their rearranged Matchday 16 fixture away at Carl Zeiss Jena on Wednesday (18:00 CET). However, the goalless draw from the reverse fixture did provide a warning. Here’s the key stats and facts ahead of the game at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.

Unbeaten record

Bayern and Jena have met 27 times before in the Bundesliga, with the Munich Frauen yet to lose a single game. They have won 22 alongside five draws for an impressive head-to-head record. There is no other team Bayern have faced in the Bundesliga so often without being beaten at least once. FCB have also gone nine meetings without even conceding, winning seven to nil, plus two 0-0 draws.

Clean sheets galore

Bayern’s defence has been the hardest to breach of all teams this season, conceding only five goals across 16 games, keeping 11 clean sheets. Ena Mahmutovic has let in only three goals in 11 appearances, saving 89.3 percent of shots, while Mala Grohs has shipped just two in five games, saving 81.8 percent of attempts on her goal.

Scoring plenty too

The Munich Frauen have scored three goals or more in each of their last 13 Bundesliga outings – a new record in Germany’s top flight. It makes the 0-0 draw with Jena at the Campus even more of an outlier, as the only game in which they have failed to net this season.

José Barcala’s side have a total of 61 goals to their name from 16 games played. Last season they scored 56 in 22 matches; the year before that it was 60.

Ever-present Tanikawa

One player who’s embodied that Bayern consistency this season is Momoko Tanikawa. The 20-year-old, who recently signed a new contract, has appeared in all 16 Bundesliga fixtures and so often provides those magic moments. So far the Japan international has scored seven goals and provided one assist in league action.

Experience meets development

This fixture also offers up a contrast in approaches and experience. Bayern have the oldest squad in the Bundesliga with an average age of 26.4 years, while Jena have one of the youngest at 24.2 years.

Although the goalless draw at home earlier this season remains a blemish on the campaign, Bayern can look back on impressive recent results away at Jena, with 1-0 and 4-0 wins in the Bundesliga, plus 3-0 and 9-1 victories in the DFB Cup in recent years.
