A home win, a club best and a league record! FC Bayern Women had every reason to celebrate in their victory over RB Leipzig in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga on Friday evening. In front of a sellout crowd – including president Herbert Hainer – for the first home match of the new season, Alexander Straus' side made it two wins from two in the league with a 6-2 triumph.
Vanessa Fudalla (3') gave the visitors an early lead but Linda Dallmann (40') and Georgia Stanway (45'+4) overturned the deficit before half-time. In the second half, braces from Klara Bühl (55', 68') and substitute Lea Schüller (73', 89') sealed the win. Leipzig scored a consolation through a Fudalla penalty (76').
New club and league record
The 13th September 2024 is now a day that will go down in the history books. The win over Leipzig means the Munich girls are now unbeaten in a whopping 41 games in the league, setting a new club and league record. It's nearly two years since the last defeat on 23 October 2022 at Wolfsburg.
Gwinn, Zadrazil and Bühl start
Bayern started their opening home game of the campaign with three changes in the line-up. Giulia Gwinn began in place of Carolin Simon in defence, while Sarah Zadrazil and Bühl came in for Samantha Kerr and Sydney Lohmann, who dropped to the bench.
Narrow half-time lead
In pouring rain at the FC Bayern Campus, Leipzig made the better start and led after just three minutes. Giovanna Hoffmann squared it to Fudalla on the edge of the box and she hammered it into the roof of the net. But the German champions weren't rattled by the early deficit and went on the hunt for the equaliser, although clear-cut chances were in short supply for a long time. However, shortly before half-time, Dallmann netted the overdue equaliser with a strong individual effort and her 50th goal in a Bayern shirt. Better was to come: with virtually the last kick of the half, Stanway made it 2-1 from a short corner, with the help of a deflection from Leipzig's Lou-Ann Joly.
Fast-paced second half
The hosts wanted to put the game to bed early on in the second half and extended their lead on 55 minutes, when Dallmann set up Bühl and the German international made it 3-1. Just 13 minutes later, Bühl was celebrating a brace when she tucked the ball in after good play from Tuva Hansen. Straus' side still weren't satisfied, though. In the 73rd minute, substitute Schüller curled the ball into the far corner following a quick counter-attack for 5-1. The win was then blotted when centre-back Linda Sembrandt was shown a second yellow card for a foul in the box and Fudalla converted the subsequent penalty. But Schüller had the final say, completing the 6-2 scoreline in the 89th minute.
Hoffenheim at home and Bremen away
The first home match of the season is followed by another meeting on home turf on Monday 23 September, when the German champions welcome TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to the FC Bayern Campus for Matchday 3 of the Women's Bundesliga (kick-off 18:00 CEST). A week later, on Sunday 29 September, the next three points are up for grabs at SV Werder Bremen at 14:00 CEST.
