FCB Women aiming to equal club record against promoted Mainz

Back on home soil: after the winning start to the 2026/27 Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga season at Union Berlin, the first home match is on the programme for FC Bayern Women on Monday evening (18:00 CEST). Head coach José Barcala’ side welcome Bundesliga newcomers 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the FC Bayern Campus.

After the 4-1 opening win at the Alten Försterei, the Munich girls are now unbeaten in 43 Bundesliga games and have the opportunity to equal the club record of 44 consecutive matches without defeat. And they can take a lot of confidence from their record against promoted side: Bayern have won each of their last 12 league meetings with newly promoted teams, by an aggregate score of 41-2.

The encounter with Mainz 05 is also a first in the Bundesliga. The only previous clash against predecessor club TSV Schott Mainz, whose team was incorporated into Mainz 05 in 2023, came in the second round of the DFB Cup in 2014/15 and ended in a 9-1 success for Bayern.

Opponents: Mainz 05

It’s been a sharp rise for the women from Mainz. After promotion to the second tier in 2025, they went back-to-back with second place last season. The 05ers hosted Werder Bremen at Bruchweg in their Bundesliga debut, but despite a committed performance, they were left empty-handed after a 2-1 defeat.

The Rhineland-Palatinate club have added targeted reinforcements to their squad for the first campaign in the top flight. In Saskia Matheis, they’ve signed an experienced midfielder who’s previously played in the Bundesliga for Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt. They also rely on young players such as Canadian college player Mattson Strickler.

Team news

Anna Klink (metacarpal fracture), Franziska Kett (ankle), Stine Ballisager (thigh) and Sarah Zadrazil (ACL tear) are not available for the meeting with Mainz. There is a possibility that Giulia Gwinn and Lena Oberdorf could return to the squad following their injuries.

José Barcala: “We’ve prepared well for our first home match in the last few days. The focus has been on our collective behaviour and on implementing our structure on the pitch consistently. We expect the opponents to be very compact with a deep-lying back five, so it’ll be crucial that we move the Mainz defence, create spaces and exploit them effectively in the final third.”

Ena Mahmutovic: “The anticipation for our first home match is obviously very high. We’re looking forward to playing in front of our fans at the Campus again and putting on a good first display for them. Mainz will certainly pose challenges for us with a low block but we’re well prepared for that. We’ll give everything to win the match and want to pick up from where we left off against Union.”
