Johannes Voigtmann has announced his retirement from the German national basketball team. After 11 years wearing the DBB jersey, the 33-year-old Bayern center steps away as both a world and European champion – and as one of the most successful players in German basketball history. Voigtmann will be honored at Thursday’s international game in Cologne.
Voigtmann made 128 appearances for Germany after making his debut against Italy on July 10, 2014. The national team won 93 of those games, giving him a win rate of 72.7 percent. He scored 830 points in total, averaging 6.5 points per game.
His international career was defined by major tournaments and historic achievements. Voigtmann competed at four European Championships and two World Cups. Including the Olympic Games, he represented Germany at eight major tournaments.
In 2021, he helped Germany qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. A year later, Germany claimed the bronze medal at EuroBasket 2022. The biggest success followed in 2023, when the German team made history by sensationally winning its first-ever FIBA World Cup title.
Voigtmann was also part of the team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, serving as co-captain. In 2025, the Thüringen native crowned his international career by winning the European Championship. His final appearance came on August 30, 2025, against Lithuania in the EuroBasket group stage, where he suffered a knee injury.
Voigtmann represents an era in which German basketball established itself among the world’s elite. A versatile, selfless and internationally experienced player, he shaped the national team for more than a decade – and was part of Germany’s golden generation.
