After a long winter break which included intense training over winter camp, Bundesliga action will be back for the FC Bayern women this Sunday when they take on 1. FC Köln at the Grünwalder Stadion at 2 pm CET.
While the second half of the season began before Christmas with a 2-0 win against Turbine Potsdam, the German champions still have 10 Bundesliga games to go before the end of the season. “Naturally we’re the favorites, it’s a role that we face. But we’re still far from underestimating any opponent in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga,” said Veronica Boquete.
The Bayern women look to build on their 12-point lead at the top of the table over DFB-Pokal winners VfL Wolfsburg and Champions League winners 1. FFC Frankfurt. Köln, conversely, are struggling in last place this season with only six points after being promoted to the Bundesliga in the previous year.
Good news came from the Bayern camp as Lena Lotzen and Sarah Romert were able to complete parts of training. The two will miss this weekend’s encounter along with Katharina Baunach. Mana Iwabuchi and new signing Claire Falknor were able to take to the field in Bayern’s friendly against the Arsenal Ladies during the winter camp in Spain and are now available.
Over the break, the team completed “very intensive training sessions and tactical improvements in order to better adjust to opponents ,” said Melanie Leupolz. Coach Thomas Wörle expects “an intense first game as well as a highly-motivated Köln team, who will fight passionately to remain in the league.”
