FC Bayern Basketball dropped their second consecutive game to ratiopharm ulm in as many games, this time a 74-65 loss in the final game of Group G in the Eurocup Last 32.
The Reds had already punched their ticket to the next round of the Eurocup last week thus the result had no impact other than losing to their German rivals. Munich were limited in their roster availability as Dusko Savanovic joined Bryce Taylor and Nihad Djedovic as inactive after suffering a back injury during warmups.
Ulm jumped out to an 17-point lead after the first quarter. However, Anton Gavel scored 17 points and Maxi Kleber added 13 points to help Bayern climb back to make the final score respectable.
In the next round of the Eurocup, Bayern will face ALBA Berlin in a home-and-home series, first in the German capital on February 24th, and the return matchup on either March 1st or 2nd at the Audi Dome.
Bayern return home on Saturday, February 13th to host the Basketball Lions of Braunschweig for the 18:30 tip-off in the Basketball Bundesliga. After a trip to BG Göttingen, Bayern will host the BBL Top 4 next weekend with a clash against the Brose Baskets Bamberg on February 20th.
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - ULM): 7-24, 19-20, 20-15, 19-15
FC Bayern Team: Anton Gavel (17 points), Maxi Kleber (13), Deon Thompson (10), Alex Renfore (9/5 assists), Justin Cobbs (8/6 ast), John Bryant (4), Paul Zipser (4/8 rebounds), Karim Jallow, Daniel Mayr. DNP: Dejan Kovacevic, Dusko Savanovic and Sebastian Schmitt.
Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "The result today was not so important, but of course, athletes always want to win. Ulm were confident from the beginning in their shots and made field goals, something they carried over from Sunday. We wanted to see where the players stood physically at this moment, unfortunately many are not in the best condition. Ulm deservedly won, congratulations. We must improve our physical fitness so we can play offense and defense at our tempo."
Anton Gavel, Guard, FCBB: "We studied the game on Sunday very closely of course, and wanted to win this game at all cost. But we were simply terrible in the first half."
Thorsten Leibenath, Head Coach, Ulm: "We moved and shot the ball well. We were not going to win anything today but I am happy with how we were able to work on our defense and applying pressure. Bayern were not at full strength, as they were missing three key players."
Justin Cobbs, Anton Gavel, Paul Zipser, Maxi Kleber and Deon Thompson started the final game of Group G in the Eurocup Last 32. ratiopharm ulm started off on fire, making six of nine three-pointer attempts in the first quarter, jumping out to the early lead (5-18, 6' minutes). Munich's offense started off just as slow as their defense. Bryant scored the Reds' first points after a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought. The first quarter eneded clearly in Ulm's favor as they led 24-7.
The second period started similarly to the opening quarter as Bayern chances were limited. This time it was Gavel who broke a five-and-a-half minute dry spell with a three-pointer (10-28, 13'). Ulm remained without question the better team in all relevant categories of the game. Kleber offered a highlight and a chance to spark the team with a highlight tomahawk dunk. However Munich trailed 44-26 at halftime.
FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic was forced to call timeout only 20 seconds into the second half. The huddle proved to be helpful, as Bayern were finally focused and able to rally (34-48, 23'). Unfortunately Bayern were not able to gain control and complete the comeback. Ulm's offense decided the quarter, extending the score to 59-46 in their favor.
A thirteen-point deficit at the beginning of the final quarter is not impossible to overcome and Bayern switched to the next gear. Gavel and Zipser scored and Bayern had scratched back to within single digits (50-59, 32'). Munich could smell the blood in the water, however the deficit from the opening quarter was too huge to overcome. Ulm win the final game in Group G 74-65 however Bayern are group winners.
