The dream is over for the FC Bayern women. Tom Wörle's side missed out on the DFB Cup final after a 2-1 loss to SC Sand on Sunday. Vivianne Miedema gave Bayern the lead in the first half but the home team fought back and got the eventual winner seven minutes from time to reach the final in Köln in May.
"Sand put on an incredible fight and were rightfully rewarded. They won deservedly. It was a very close match in which we made it very difficult for ourselves," said Wörle after the match. It was the first loss of the season for the team, which in itself is an incredible achievement. FCB captain Melanie Behringer also pitched in after the final whistle, "We couldn't get into the game and just weren't good enough in the end. Sand deserved the win."
The silver lining was the return of international Melanie Leupolz after six weeks out with injury. The focus for the remainder of the season now turns fully to the Bundesliga where Bayern have a healthy lead and are in a great position to defend their title.
