Setback as 10-man FCB fall to feisty Bochum

FC Bayern fell to a 3-2 defeat to VfL Bochum on Sunday. Jamal Musiala handed Bayern the lead, but Takuma Asano and Keven Schlotterbeck netted for Bochum before the break. Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a second bookable offence, Kevin Stöger converting the ensuing penalty. Harry Kane pulled one back, but Bayern slipped to a defeat.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Minjae Kim and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Musiala and Thomas Müller, with Kane up front. Mazraoui had to be replaced with a knock in the first half, Upamecano taking over. Bryan Zaragoza, Leroy Sané, Eric Dier and Mathys Tel came on for Kimmich, Choupo-Moting, Guerreiro and Müller in the second half.

Bochum bounce back

Bochum made a bold start, Anthony Losilla heading over before Stöger miscued from distance. Bayern soon asserted their authority and keeper Manuel Riemann denied Musiala. Kane saw a header blocked before Riemann parried against Musiala, but Bochum failed to clear the ball and Musiala netted from 15 yards.

Kane soon had only Riemann to beat but fired over, Musiala aiming wide. After an interruption because of fan protests, Kimmich had an effort blocked. The momentum swung the other way for a spell, Moritz Broschinski heading over, but Asano levelled the scores from a counter. The Ruhr valley outfit took the lead when Schlotterbeck headed in from a corner. Goretzka aimed too high and Bayern were 2-1 down at half-time.

Kane's goal not enough

Musiala saw an effort blocked as Bochum sat back before another interruption. Riemann denied Zaragoza and Kim made a block against Losilla at the other end.

Upamecano was sent off for a second bookable offence after a challenge on Schlotterbeck, Stöger netting from the spot. Musiala and Sané saw efforts saved, but Munich pulled one back when Tel invited Kane to tap in from close range. The striker had a header saved before Neuer made a fine save, tipping Moritz-Broni Kwarteng's deflected effort over the bar. Riemann denied Sané as Bayern fell to a narrow defeat.

The result means Bayern have 50 points from 22 matches, eight short of Leverkusen. The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Leipzig.
