A successful dress rehearsal before the opening competitive match of the season! FC Bayern provided a commanding performance in a 3-0 friendly win against WSG Tirol on Tuesday evening. At Sportpark Unterhaching, Harry Kane (3’) put the German record champions in the driving seat early on. Three minutes after the break, João Palhinha made it 2-0 (48') with a remarkable goal as his first for the club. Gabriel Vidović scored in the closing stages to make it 3-0 (80').
Three days before the DFB Cup match at SSV Ulm, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was without several players from the first-team squad due to fitness issues. Nevertheless, the Munich side got off to an excellent start to the match. After a switch of play from youth prospect Javier Fernández, Alphonso Davies brought the ball inside off the left. Kane's first shot was blocked, but the FCB forward converted the rebound with a left-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 1-0 early on (3'). Bayern continued to set the tone from then on, but seldom created any clear goalscoring opportunities.
Bayern on top with good chances
Kingsley Coman had a golden chance to double the scoring in the 34th minute. After strong work in the buildup from Adam Aznou, the winger shot from ten metres out but his attempt was blocked at the last moment. Adin Ličina had the best chance in the 45th minute. After a pinpoint cross from Coman, the youngster headed the ball straight at WSG goalkeeper Adam Stejskal.
The second half began much like the first - with Bayern scoring. A cross from Ličina was cleared by the WSG defence but only to the feet of Palhinha, who found the net with a crisp volley to make it 2-0. At the other end, Tirol almost pulled one back immediately but striker Stefan Škrbo’s attempt struck the underside of the crossbar following a cross from the left (50').
Vidović rounds off the scoring
FCB continued to control the game without creating any dangerous chances. In the 71st minute, the lively Ličina had a good shot from the edge of the box which went just wide of the post. Ten minutes before the end, Munich pressed the visitors once again and were rewarded with their third goal. Nestory Irankunda pounced on a pass that was too short, made a strong challenge on a defender and whipped a ball into the box. Vidović was in the right place at the right time and slotted home to make it 3-0.
DFB Cup opener on Friday
Bayern's first competitive match of the new season is this Friday. At 20:45 CEST, the Reds host Bundesliga 2 promoted side SSV Ulm in the first round of the DFB Cup. The first Bundesliga match is then scheduled for Sunday 25 August, away at VfL Wolfsburg.
