FC Bayern have picked up more awards: After securing the domestic double of the championship and DFB Cup, it’s clear that three of the German record champions' star names are held in high esteem by their professional colleagues. In the annual vote by the players' union VDV (Vereinigung der Vertragsfußballspieler e. V.), in which all professional players of the top four German divisions are eligible to participate, Robert Lewandowski was honoured as a player, Alphonso Davies as a newcomer and Hansi Flick as coach of the season.
Prolific award collector Lewandowski
Top scorer Lewandowski secured the "Silver Boot" for the fourth time after 2013, 2017 and 2018 as the best player in the Bundesliga. The 31-year-old received 40.2 percent of the votes, leaving Dortmund's Jadon Sancho (13.9%) and team-mate Joshua Kimmich (7.2%) far behind.
Flick is coach of the season
By contrast, Hansi Flick was honoured for the first time with the 'Silver Bench', awarded for being the best man on the touchline. The 55-year-old won with an overwhelming majority of 58.2 percent, ahead of Freiburg coach Christian Streich and Mönchengladbach's Marco Rose (6.2%).
'Silver Arrow' for 'Bayern Arrow' Davies
It was also a first for Bayern's lightning-fast left-back Davies, who won the 'Silver Arrow' for the VDV Newcomer of the Season. With 45.9% of the vote, the 19-year-old Canadian clearly beat Dortmund's Erling Haaland (15.5%) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz (8.2%).
Five Bayern players in the season's Top 11
The Bundesliga top 11 of the season was also firmly in Bavarian hands. No fewer than five players from Munich were voted the best in their respective positions: Manuel Neuer (42.3%), Davies (80.4%), David Alaba (70.6%), Kimmich (73.2%) and Lewandowski (87.6%).
