Goalscorer, provider, constant threat - in a spectacular Bayern attack, one man in particular stood out. Serge Gnabry was one of the key men in Munich’s rousing 5-0 win in the big match against SC Freiburg, and was pleased with his outstanding performance. “It felt very good to produce a performance like that.”
Opened the floodgates
It took the 27-year-old precisely 13 minutes to announce himself. From around ten metres out, he headed in the important opening goal and set his team on course for victory. After a cross from Alphonso Davies, Leroy Sané had been denied by Mark Flekken from close range, from which the ball bounced up for the onrushing Gnabry to power it into the net, delighting the majority of the fans at the Allianz Arena. “My header was really great,” exclaimed the goalscorer. With a bit more luck in their finishing, Bayern could’ve had a couple more goals, but Flekken prevented them in the 21st and 40th minute with strong saves.
Sublime pass
Gnabry showed all his class again in the second half, including with his assist for Sadio Mané’s goal in the 55th minute. The Germany international delicately chipped the ball over the Freiburg backline into the feet of Mané, whose lob over Flekken to make it 4-0 had even more feeling.
Constant threat over 90 minutes
As well as his decisive opening goal and the wonderful assist for the fourth goal, the attack was a constant threat for the Reds throughout the 90 minutes. In the 51st minute, he was inches away from his second goal, striking the post after a fine one-two with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. In the closing stages, he produced another moment of quality, slipping the ball through to Mané, who set up Marcel Sabitzer for the fifth and final goal. With a goal, an assist and some brilliant passing, Gnabry made his mark on the match and ensured an all-round successful evening for Bayern.
