Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Cameroon

Narrow opening defeats for Choupo-Moting and Davies

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting kicked off his World Cup campaign on Thursday with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Switzerland. The Bayern striker led out Cameroon as captain and played 75 minutes. The Indomitable Lions were the better side in the first half but couldn’t turn that into a goal. The Swiss then found their feet after the break and Breel Embolo scored the only goal of the day on 48 minutes.

Unfortunate loss for Davies’s Canada

Alphonso Davies made his World Cup debut as Canada returned to the tournament for the first time in 36 years on Wednesday evening, but things didn’t work out. The Canucks dominated large parts of their opening fixture of Group F against favourites Belgium, created a number of chances but found no way past Thibaut Courtois. The best opportunity fell to the Bayern defender but he saw his penalty saved on 10 minutes. The only goal came on the stroke of half-time from Michy Batshuayi.

Davies’s next game is up against club teammate Josip Stanisic and Croatia on Sunday.
