Goalkeepers deep in conversation: Manuel Neuer, Mattias Andersson and Michael Rechner

FC Bayern goalkeeping team exchange ideas with DHB goalkeeping coach Mattias Andersson

To be able to practise your craft at the very highest level, it's important to constantly develop your own skills - including through external influences. This also applies to the FC Bayern goalkeeping team led by goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner, who took part in an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas with Mattias Andersson, the goalkeeping coach of the German national handball team and THW Kiel, on Wednesday. The workshop at Säbener Straße was attended by FCB goalkeepers Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz - who gave detailed insights into their development process and took a very active part in the discussion - as well as young goalkeepers from the FC Bayern Campus and the Campus goalkeeping coaches led by coordinator Tom Starke.

"Think outside the box"

"We want to think outside the box, learn from other sports and improve through this kind of insight. The discussion was excellent," said Rechner, drawing a positive conclusion after the former world-class handball player's visit. During his playing career, Andersson was one of the best goalkeepers in his sport and was a Champions League winner, European champion and Olympic silver medallist. After he retired, the 150-time Swedish international initially worked successfully as a goalkeeping coach at club level before joining the German Handball Federation in February 2020.

But first Andersson was able to have a look at the footballers' morning training session, before the 46-year-old then passed on his expertise on playing between the sticks during a joint round of discussions in the auditorium of the performance centre at Säbener Straße. The seven-time German champion showed the keepers special exercises from the world of handball. The lively discussion also covered similarities in goalkeeping in football and handball, as well as mental aspects of being able to compete at the highest level and how to help the youth keepers at the workshop on their way into the professional game.

Push ahead with interlinking with the Campus

The youth players were consequently repeatedly given the opportunity to ask questions and get tips. "We want to push ahead with interlinking with the Campus and also bring the boys together with Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz. The aim is for the boys from the Campus to learn and benefit from this," explained Rechner.
