FC Bayern narrowly miss out on inaugural Infinity League triumph

FC Bayern made it all the way to the final of the inaugural Infinity League from streaming service DAZN, with the club’s mixed team ending up second after a tight 8-7 defeat to Global United FC.

It was the showpiece event of the tournament, which was played for the first time at Munich’s Olympia-Eissportzentrum on Sunday. As well as the two finalists, there were also teams from Wolfsburg and Delay Sports, the amateur club with the widest reach in Germany. Bayern’s team, coached by Giovane Élber, included club legends such as Zé Roberto, Claudio Pizarro and Diego Contento. They battled for victory alongside players from the World Squad, content creators, as well as former FC Bayern Women players and current youth players.

Thriller in Infinity League final

The men's and women's teams played against each other in one half each. In the group stage, which was played as a round robin, FCB managed seven points, finishing ahead of their final opponents Global United (five), Delay Sports (three) and Wolfsburg (one). The two best teams in the preliminary round battled it out in the final. Global United took the lead after just 10 seconds, but Bayern’s women led by Melanie Behringer, Gina Lewandowski and Leonie Maier fought back and turned the game around. The men surrendered their lead in the second half and were ultimately beaten by the team of internationals led by ex-Bayern player Lúcio.

There was a special rule during the tournament where players could shoot at two additional side goals for around one minute in each half. Spectators were also treated to a real spectacle in other respects. The games were played on a new, interactive pitch called GlassFloor, which combined state-of-the-art graphic video technology with gamification elements. In addition to entertaining music acts, body cams and microphones were also used.
