There was a goalless draw in the Bayern battle: France with Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman shared the spoils with Netherlands and Matthijs de Ligt on Friday night. The meeting between two of the leading favourites for the EURO crown finished 0-0 in Leipzig. Earlier on Friday, Konrad Laimer and Austria claimed their first win of the tournament, beating Poland 3-1.
Laimer starts again
Bayern man Laimer played the whole 90 minutes in the centre of midfield. His team took the lead in the ninth minute through a powerful header from centre-back Gernot Trauner. The Poles pushed for the equaliser after that and got their reward on the half-hour mark when Krzysztof Piatek reacted quickest to a blocked shot and poked the ball in.
Austria prevailed in the second period, though, thanks to a placed finish from Christoph Baumgartner and a penalty from Marko Arnautovic. It means Laimer and Co are still in with a chance of qualifying for the round of 16 going into the last group game against Netherlands on Tuesday night (21:00 CEST).
Netherlands v France goalless
In the same group, Netherlands and France are also in a good position ahead of the decisive third round of fixtures. The draw leaves both Les Bleus and the Oranje on four points from two games.
Bayern defender de Ligt didn't feature for Ronald Koeman's side. Upamecano again started for the French, while Coman came on in the 75th minute. "Unfortunately we didn't get a goal but we had a lot of chances," summarised the winger afterwards, before looking ahead to the meeting with Poland: "There's one game left, which we absolutely have to win - preferably by a big margin because we want to finish first."
