Bayern were 4-0 up at home to Darmstadt at the end of October as the 69th minute of the match dawned. After the men from Munich regained possession, Thomas Müller spotted Harry Kane in space and initiated a counter-attack. Just short of the halfway line, the England captain lined up the ball and looked up. "I thought to myself, why not give it a go?"
Our number 9 didn't hesitate and just let fly. The shot seemed to go on forever. The ball soared through the Arena as if drawn on a string, finally flying over keeper Marcel Schuhen and into the Darmstadt goal. Kane could hardly believe it himself.
Even back then, it was obvious that this wonder goal would have a permanent place in every season review. Now the campaign's over, the record champions' fans have paid special tribute to the goal and voted it the FC Bayern Goal of the Season for 2023/2024.
45 per cent of the vote went to Kane
"I always look at where the goalkeeper is and whether he's out of his goal area," the centre-forward said after the game. "I looked up and could see that he wasn't on his line. Sometimes it just goes wide and there's a goal kick, but luckily this time it just slipped under the crossbar."
To the delight of the fans too, who voted it the best Bayern goal of last season. Kane's wonder strike garnered 45 per cent of all the votes cast. In second place (13%) was Frans Krätzig's stunner in the pre-season friendly against Liverpool. The youngster drilled the ball into the net with a volley to make the final score 4-3.
12 per cent of the votes went to Serge Gnabry's artistic effort in the 8-1 win against Mainz 05. From a deep midfield position, Leon Goretzka floated in a cross and the striker, with his back to goal, somehow back-heeled the ball over the line.
Incidentally, Kane was not only number one with the Bayern fans: his goal against Darmstadt was also voted the Bundesliga Goal of the Season.
