Although it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure a place in the final at Wembley, Alphonso Davies’ goal in the Champions League semi-final second leg still sent Bayern fans around the world wild. With around an hour gone at the Bernabeu, the Canadian cut inside from the left wing onto his weaker right foot and smashed the ball into the far top corner. It put Bayern ahead in the tie in Madrid and was simply a joy to watch.

Fans very much agreed and voted Phonzie’s strike as May’s Goal of the Month with an overwhelming majority of 66 percent. Second place went to Leon Goretzka from the 2-0 win against Wolfsburg (13%), followed by Carolin Simon’s free-kick for the women in their 4-1 victory at Hoffenheim (9%).
Despite Davies’ stunner and a good performance in Madrid, Bayern fell just short of reaching the final. Next year’s final will be at the Allianz Arena, with the Champions League campaign starting again in September – hopefully we’ll see many more special European goals once again.
