“Overall, it was an incredible night,“ four-time goalscorer Harry Kane summarised the evening. FC Bayern had just celebrated a perfect start to the new Champions League campaign with a thumping 9-2 victory against Dinamo Zagreb, the club's joint-biggest win in the competition. “We won 9-2 but what really matters to me is that all 11 players on the pitch worked defensively until the end,” commented Vincent Kompany. Concerning the substitution of Manuel Neuer, he added: ”We didn't want to take any risks.” fcbayern.com has more of the post-match reaction.
The reaction to the Dinamo Zagreb game
Jan-Christian Dreesen (CEO): “I'm happy we played a good game and started so well. I was a little nervous for a moment when we conceded the two goals, but in the end it's a feeling of joy. Today's game was truly extraordinary. I hope we'll be leaders in this new league format following this win. We all need to get used to the new format, but goal difference is definitely important. You can feel we have good energy. Those that aren't playing are also supporting the team and so there's a good atmosphere.”
Vincent Kompany: “I'm happy for the boys. I didn't score the goals, they did. Even after we conceded the two goals we stayed calm. That was good. Obviously, this shouldn't happen to us and we have to work on that, but we stayed calm. We had good energy and it was fun. The team showed enthusiasm. We didn't want to take any risks with Manuel Neuer. We won 9-2 but what really matters to me is that Harry Kane, for example, tackles in our own penalty box. We had 11 players on the pitch who worked towards the back until the end. We've played one game, not more. Now it's all about the next game again.”
Harry Kane: “It was a great game and an impressive performance from us. We pressured them from the start and took our chances. After half-time, unfortunately we switched off for 10 minutes. We need to learn from that. Overall, it was an incredible night.”
Reaction from Zagreb
Sergej Jakirović (Coach, Dinamo Zagreb): “It was a difficult evening for us. Bayern are in a different league. We didn't play well in the first half and Bayern didn't give much away. After half-time, we got it back to 3-2 and had the chance to equalise. However, we were inferior physically and Bayern recognised the spaces. We were punished for every mistake we made. It's a lesson for us. Bayern were on a top level. Congratulations on the win.”
