It was close, it was back and forth, and the three points were nearly locked away safely in FC Bayern's team bus already. However, Eintracht Frankfurt scored with their third counter-attacking goal of the day and celebrated a painful last-minute equaliser in the 94th minute. “The last goal was obviously really bitter for us after such a good performance,” Serge Gnabry commented afterwards. “Don't forget that Frankfurt had an outstanding goalkeeper today,” added Thomas M üller. fcbayern.com has more of the post-match reaction.
Reaction to the game at Frankfurt
Christoph Freund: “You have to distinguish. We're disappointed with the result but the performance was really good. In the first half, we were extremely dominant. It was fun watching the team play. However, we conceded three goals and that is painful. The performance was really good but the result wasn't what we had hoped for. Of course, there are things we still want to improve. Generally speaking, however, the team is on a really good track.”
Vincent Kompany: “We need to stay calm. This was simply a great performance by the team. We had so many chances to score. Last season we lost 5-1 here – today was a completely different game. In the end, we probably deserved more but now we've played against Leverkusen and Frankfurt. If you look at how the game went, we just have to keep playing this way. We have to follow our own path and trust that these performances will get us the results.
Today, Frankfurt showed the efficiency of a top team. They didn't have many chances but scored with nearly every one. Of course, we need to talk about how we can perfect this dominant style of play a bit more and allow even fewer chances for our opponents.
Against Werder Bremen, we didn't allow a single shot. That already came close to what we want to achieve. We will keep trying to dominate our games. I'm experienced enough to know when things are going well and when they aren't. If we keep doing what we did today, we will reach the next level. And we need to stay calm.”
Thomas Müller: “Today it finished 3-3 and Frankfurt only had chances for four goals. Today they scored three because they have that class. However, in my opinion we have to win this game. If we play like this game 15 times, then we win it 13 times. I like the way we played away from home against the second-placed team in the Bundesliga. We completely dominated them and took all of their strengths away.
I started for the first time in a while today and it was fun to see how we constricted our opposition and created chances. We also shouldn't forget that Frankfurt had an outstanding goalkeeper today.”
Serge Gnabry: “Frankfurt didn't have many chances but they took them. We had the game under control. The last goal was obviously really bitter for us after such a good performance. I believe we played very well, we had everything under control, we attacked a lot and gave very few chances away. In the end, we should have come away from this with a win. That's football. Frankfurt have good attacking players. It's bitter for us but life goes on. I think the difference was obvious.
I think if we attack so much, dominate the game so clearly and have so much possession, it's really gruelling for the opposition. Eventually, you create that one chance when your opponents aren't at 100% anymore. In the long run, I believe we'll see just that.”
Reaction from the Frankfurt camp
Dino Toppmöller (head coach Eintracht Frankfurt): ”The end of the game was wild. Obviously, Bayern pushed us back right from the start. We wanted to be a little more active but then we defended in a deep block. Bayern's set pieces were very dangerous. Obviously, it's really frustrating to concede goals that way. In one or two situations we were lucky not to concede even more. There were also a lot of crosses coming in from the wings and on the bench we always had the feeling that could evolve into something dangerous, but it never really did.”
Hugo Etikité (Eintracht Frankfurt): “We did a great job today. We fought as a team. It was a very difficult game for us, we had to defend a lot. This feels like a win. I'm happy for the team, we worked hard for this result.”
Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt): “We did very well today. We played well as a team. I believe we showed a good performance. We stuck together as a team, defensively and offensively, and we were clinical in front of goal. We didn't create many chances but we put away the few we had. We're happy.”
