An important battling win for FC Bayern! The Munich men claimed a narrow but deserved 2-1 victory at SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, which extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to a healthy six points thanks to Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig. “We had to really show a lot of mentality,” summarised Joshua Kimmich after the match. “We’ve certainly had games where we’ve been technically better, but this win is good for us – particularly the way we won today.” Head coach Vincent Kompany could only concur: “It wasn’t our nicest performance today but it was one of the nicest wins.” fcbayern.com has compiled all the post-match reaction.
The reaction to the match at Freiburg
Max Eberl (board member for sport): "It was a very tricky away game at Freiburg. You don't like coming here in the Bundesliga because you know what you're up against – passion, emotions but above all a very hardworking and disciplined team. I think we started very well. It certainly wasn't our most brilliant performance but you could tell we wanted to win. In terms of morale, that was a very, very important game for us."
Vincent Kompany: “I knew this game wasn’t going to be easy. Freiburg are second in the home table, we’ve watched enough of their games. I knew we’d have to fight for this win, that was to be expected. It’s been a tough week with three games, we’ve mostly been travelling. We came into the game with the right mentality. We’ve often played good football and won. Today it wasn’t our nicest performance but it was one of the nicest wins. This Freiburg side are just very strong at home.”
Joshua Kimmich: “We had to really show a lot of mentality. We’ve certainly had games where we’ve been technically better, but this win is good for us – particularly the way we won today. It was certainly an awesome feeling to win this way. After going 2-0 up, we were looking for control. I think we did that pretty well after the second goal. Their goal came somewhat out of nowhere – it wasn’t like they were really putting us under pressure. Of course, they can put opponents under pressure with their style of play, but I think overall we did well at keeping them away from our goal. Everyone gave their all until the end to defend the attacks. We can’t have 80 percent possession and create 10 big chances every time. There are also games like today, where you have only have two or three big chances, of which you have to take two and then defend everything at the back.”
Josip Stanišić: "Maybe we could've played a bit better in one or two situations, but we don't want to lose ourselves in details too much now."
The reaction from the Freiburg camp
Julian Schuster (coach): “I said to the players before the match: what I’m judging today is how we start the game, the attitude we show, how we present ourselves in the tackles, and the passion and desire we show on the pitch. And the team gave me everything there. It’s also no accident that we were able to keep the contest open until the end in this way. That was good, that was important – important for today but also for the next tasks. It was about producing a performance we can build on. I was pleased with that.”
Matthias Ginter (centre-back): “I’m not sure how much we can take away from this. Bayern is always a very different game, just in terms of the approach. Now we have a completely different game coming up at Bochum. I think these next weeks and games are where we have to get results if we want to achieve our aims. It’s obviously disappointing that we’ve lost three in a row.”
