Reaction to Feyenoord match – Joshua Kimmich: ‘Absolutely can’t doubt ourselves’

“We need to be honest. I think Feyenoord deserved it. That’s my opinion. Not because we didn’t fight. We ran and gave our all, but we also felt they could have dangerous moments, which they took well. Even though we had a lot of chances today, I always felt that we could score a goal or two, maybe even more. Maybe we could’ve done more in the final 10 minutes,” said head coach Vincent Kompany after the disappointing 3-0 loss at Feyenoord. fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction from Wednesday’s Champions League game.

Vincent Kompany: “I always felt we could score. It’s just the moments where Feyenoord scored weren’t a big surprise. You could feel that during the game. Maybe it wasn’t enough today as individuals and a collective. But the only thing in our favour is that we play again in three days. That’s the best thing, being able to react on the pitch again.

“We’re not afraid of the Champions League play-offs. If we have to play them, then we have to play them. You have to earn a place in the top eight. And the format was created to create just this suspense. But you have to earn it. It wasn’t good today, but there’s still one more game. The most important thing for me is that we keep winning lots of games, and we’re doing that.”

Joshua Kimmich: “We definitely squandered too many chances. When I see how many big chances we had again and how much effort we put in to create a chance, but we squandered too many and offered the opponent simple opportunities. It was really bad today. There were hints of it against Wolfsburg and also against Hoffenheim, failing to take a lot of chances and giving away unnecessary ones. You get punished for that in the Champions League. Even with all the chances, we didn’t deserve to win.

“I’ve said it in the past but I feel like we’re in the midst of a process and are making good progress. Even when I look around the changing room, you don’t see anyone blaming others for a defeat, which was different in previous spells like this. The group is sticking together, which encourages me. I’m convinced we can show a good reaction.

“But we’re obviously in a bad spot in the Champions League. We’ve just made too many mistakes. It’s not like opponents have outplayed us.

“It doesn’t help us complaining. We need to cut out mistakes. Your feeling after such a big defeat is obviously negative, but we also know we can show a very different side to us in three days. It’s encouraging how we reacted after the Barcelona defeat. I think we then won 10 games in a row, and that has to be our goal again. We absolutely can’t doubt ourselves, above all the group. When I look at the changing room, I see lots of guys who are really up for playing again in three days.”

Neuer: "Frustration obviously the overwhelming feeling"

Manuel Neuer: “Frustration is obviously the overwhelming feeling at first. Everyone is disappointed. At the end of the day, it wasn’t enough. We maybe didn’t show the right determination at key moments. Whether in attack or defence, Feyenoord simply showed more grit and knew to keep us away from their goal. They did well defensively and in transition, especially on the counter. It obviously hurts.

“If we don’t end up in the top eight, we’ve still got a chance of progressing via the play-offs. But we’re not looking at that yet. We’re focusing on the next game. We need to work on this first, learn from it and draw the right conclusions. A reason for today’s defeat could be that we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and didn’t manage to play our game until the end. We also didn’t apply enough pressure in defence to really cause Feyenoord problems. We crossed too early in the second half, which made it easy for the opposition to defend. The positive thing is that we have another chance to make up for things in three days. We want to win in Freiburg.”

Reaction from the Feyenoord camp

Santiago Gimenez, double goalscorer: “I’m really happy. Nobody expected us to win, which makes us even happier. I think these surprises are the most important thing in football, especially on nights like this. We know Bayern are a great team. But in the end, our counter-attacks worked perfectly and we were able to score goals at the right moment.”
