Reaction to Mainz match – Vincent Kompany: ‘Had to get more out of it’

Despite a dominant display, Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz in the final home game of 2025. Vincent Kompany’s men had 85 percent possession and 24 shots to three but couldn’t get the win. “We ended up getting a point. You have to acknowledge that Mainz did a really decent job today. But our expectations are still clearly to win at home, no matter who against,” said Joshua Kimmich of the result. The coach was of a similar view, adding, “It’s disappointing regardless of the opponent and where. We always want to win.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to Sunday’s game at the Allianz Arena.

Reaction to the match against Mainz

Max Eberl (board member for sport): “They finished a counter very well. They basically only had two attacks, namely the set piece and the second goal, and then suddenly they’re 2-1 up. And you’re wondering how. But that’s just football.”

Vincent Kompany: “It’s disappointing regardless of the opponent and where. We always want to win. We didn’t manage that today. Mainz did an excellent job with the few moments they had. And we couldn’t make the difference with our big chances like we normally do. You get results like this after a game like that. Looking at things objectively, it would’ve been bad if we’d not created any chances and had gifted them loads. That wasn’t the case. We still scored two goals but unfortunately conceded two. But if we’re honest, we had to get more out of this with so many chances.”

Joshua Kimmich: “Conceding the equaliser from a set piece right before half-time was really annoying. We can’t do that, because it meant the second half was actually open. It would’ve been much easier if we hadn’t conceded it. It meant it turned into hard work and we end up pleased to even get our equaliser. We actually expected Mainz to play differently after half-time. Our plan wasn’t to change at all because the first half had been decent from our perspective. We had good chances but faced a good opposition goalkeeper who dealt with a number of situations well. We wanted to build on that in the second half but didn’t manage to at first. But we still did well. We went 2-1 down during a good spell and ended up getting a point. You also have to acknowledge that Mainz did a really decent job today. But our expectations are still clearly to win at home, no matter who against. The expectations were high given the state of the table.”

Harry Kane: “I think we completely dominated the first 44 minutes of the game. We had lots of chances to score and allowed them practically none. And then we conceded right on half-time, which changed the momentum. We came out for the second half and didn’t dominate as much. We couldn’t quite find that final pass or shot. They played well, meaning we had to fight. When you play against teams like this, they fight for every point. They can defend well, can defend the ball, can rescue situations, throw themselves into everything – and that’s what happened. At the end of the day, we’ll take the point and keep going.”

Reaction from Mainz

Urs Fischer (head coach): “Obviously we’re pleased. Getting a point in Munich isn’t a given. When you look back on the game, conceding a penalty right at the end, that obviously annoys you a bit. But the delight outweighs all that. We didn’t allow Bayern too much, even though they had their chances. We were able to rely on our goalkeeper at those times, keeping us in the game with big saves. We defended our goal with everything we had.”

Danny da Costa (defender): “It’s a tough one today. Before the game I definitely would’ve taken a point in Munich. But when you’re leading 2-1 near the end, you’d obviously like all three. So I’m a bit disappointed, but I think I’ll see things differently tomorrow.”

Daniel Batz (goalkeeper): “You’re a bit annoyed because we led 2-1. But if someone had told us we’d take a point at the Allianz Arena, then we would’ve taken that. It was a good team performance. We gave all we had and kept jabbing away at them.”
