Laimer played the full 90 minutes as Austria went down 3-0 to Spain in Los Angeles. Mikel Oyarzabal bagged a brace either side of a Pedro Porro goal as the European champions progressed and Austria, who were competing in their first World Cup since 1998, saw their journey end in the round of 32.

Things were far tighter for Croatia in Toronto, where Stanišić played the whole game against Portugal. The Bayern defender saw his team go ahead early in the second half through ex-FCB man Ivan Perišić, before Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty levelled things. Gonçalo Ramos then put Portugal ahead in the fourth minute of added time. Croatia thought they had equalised in the 103rd minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside on review, as the Vatreni, who had reached the semi-finals at the last two World Cups, bow out in the last 32.
