With four Bayern players: Germany draw 1-1 with the Netherlands

A draw to start the campaign: In their very first game under new head coach Jürgen Klopp, the German national team were leading 1–0 in Amsterdam deep in stoppage time when the Oranje managed to equalise with a stunning goal. Four FC Bayern players saw action in the clash: Jonathan Tah, Nathaniel Brown, captain Joshua Kimmich, and Serge Gnabry, who came off the bench. Jamal Musiala had to withdraw from the game at short notice. The 23-year-old, who was initially named in the starting XI, experienced problems with his thigh whilst warming up.

After a strong start by the national team, the Dutch fought their way back into what was an aggressive encounter and increasingly pinned the visitors back. A header from Virgil van Dijk following a corner appeared to have put the home side ahead, but the goal was ruled out after goalkeeper Marc Ter Stegen was shown to have been obstructed (13’). Germany took a somewhat surprising lead through Felix Nmecha (32'), with Joshua Kimmich having set up the chance with a beautiful lob. And there was even a chance to make it 2–0 when Brown sent in a superb cross, but, Karim Adeyemi's volley went soaring over the empty goal (39').

The Netherlands continued to dominate in the second half, but were denied on several occasions by the alert Ter Stegen. Nevertheless, in front of 51,437 spectators, the hosts did grab a late equaliser when Ruben van Bommel – son of Bayern legend Mark van Bommel – found Cody Gakpo with a fantastic cross with the outside of his boot, and Gakpo equalised with a superb volley (90’+4).

Two late goals secured a win for Hiroki Ito and his teammates in the opening match of their series of friendlies. In the Japanese national team’s 3–1 (1–1) win over Uruguay in Miyagi, Kento Shiogai (90'+2) and Ayase Ueda (90'+6) sealed the late victory with their goals in stoppage time. The Bayern defender played the full 90 minutes; the other goals in the match were scored by Kuryu Matsuki (11') and Maxi Araujo (42'), who had equalised for the visitors shortly before half-time.

The Blue Samurai now face Venezuela on Monday (28 September). This will be followed by matches against Ecuador (1 October) and their second game in the 'Kirin Cup' (5 October 26 against either Panama or New Zealand).

Bayern defender Minjae Kim put South Korea on the road to victory on Thursday in their convincing 3–0 (0–0) win over Ecuador. The 29-year-old set up Hyeon-Gyu Oh's opener on 54 minutes, whilst Heung-Min Son (58') and Dong-Gyeong Lee (86') also found the net for the hosts. In a hard-fought battle in Suwon that saw a total of nine yellow cards, Minjae Kim played for over 75 minutes and avoided going in the book himself.

Next up for the South Korean side are a home game against Uruguay on Monday (28 September), as well as matches against Venezuela (2 October) and Uzbekistan (6 October).
