FC Bayern Women have retained their crown as Germany’s best team after a 2-1 win away at Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 20 saw them claim the Google Pixel Bundesliga title for a second straight year – the club’s sixth championship overall. Alexander Straus’s team produced some thrilling games and overcame a number of hurdles on their way to glory. fcbayern.com looks back at six key moments on the road to this sixth crown.
Bundesliga debut at Allianz Arena
History was made early in the season as Die Frauen got to play a Bundesliga game at the Allianz Arena for the first time. The Matchday 4 encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt in front of a league record crowd of 19,000 didn’t produce any goals, though.
Top for the first time
Matchday 6 saw the big one as Wolfsburg came to Munich with top spot on the line. An excellent first half and an inspired display by Klara Bühl and Linda Dallmann saw Bayern claim a 2-1 win. Bühl set up Dallmann for the opener in the 29th minute before roles were reversed shortly before half time to double the advantage. Victory sent the defending champions into first place above their rivals for the first time this season.
Bühl ensures winning start to year
After a tough spell at the end of 2023, which saw Bayern eliminated from the Champions League and drop points away at promoted Nürnberg (1-1), Die Frauen returned from the winter break in impressive form. A 1-0 win over Hoffenheim meant it was a winning start to 2024, with Bühl scoring a lovely free-kick. Linda Sembrant also made her debut following her January arrival in Munich.
Big result in Frankfurt
Just four days after beating Carl Zeiss Jena 3-0 in the DFB Cup quarter-final, Bayern faced their next crunch game as they visited Frankfurt. Bühl put the visitors ahead in the first half before Eintracht equalised after a spell of pressure. But Lea Schüller ’s header would turn things back in Bayern’s favour and take the team onto 39 points after 15 games, just one ahead of Wolfsburg.
Lead extended
Bayern then went to Wolfsburg and the Volkswagen Arena for a top-of-the-table clash. An exciting but goalless first half saw chances for both sides, but then Straus’s team turned on the style in the second period. Bühl, Schüller, Pernille Harder and Georgia Stanway all struck to record a big and impressive 4-0 win and open up a seven-point gap over their rivals at the summit with 17 games played.
Wrapped up in Leverkusen
The title was then in the bag for the second year running at the start of May with a 2-1 win away at Bayer Leverkusen. It also extended the team’s remarkable unbeaten league run to 37 games (W33, D4), as well as taking them 54 points from 20 games, with 52 goals scored and only seven conceded.
