FC Bayern Women: Targeting three points against Jena after UWCL success

Following the 3-0 home win over Vålerenga Oslo on Tuesday, the next game for FC Bayern Women is at home this weekend. At the end of a busy week, the Munich side host FC Carl Zeiss Jena on Matchday 10 of the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga. The game at the FC Bayern Campus stadium kicks off at 14:00 CET on Sunday, 17 November (live in Germany on DAZN and Magenta Sport). Here’s all you need to know ahead of the clash in our preview.

The situation

After two recent draws in the league, the team led by captain Glódís Viggósdóttir showed impressive morale during the week and laid an important foundation for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a win against Vålerenga Oslo. Once again, it was Pernille Harder who put the Munich side on the road to victory with the opener. Within a few minutes, Giulia Gwinn (16') doubled the lead with a penalty, before midfielder Sarah Zadrazil (90'+3) made it 3-0 in the dying seconds. The reigning German champions will now look to build on their performance in Europe's premier women's club competition against Jena and claim their seventh league win of the season.

The signs are good for head coach Alexander Straus' side, as they've won all 24 Bundesliga encounters with the club from Thuringia so far. FCB have not played as many consecutive games without defeat against any other opponents in the top flight. Furthermore, the reigning German champions have not lost any of their last 41 matches against promoted teams.

The opponents: FC Carl Zeiss Jena

With nine matchdays played, FC Carl Zeiss Jena are in tenth place in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga with three points and a goal difference of 3:12. Before they were beaten 1-0 by Werder Bremen last weekend, coach Florian Kästner's team celebrated earning an important point at 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam (0-0). Prior to that, the promoted side had already picked up a point in their home match against 1. FC Köln (2-2).

Team news

Heading into the game against Jena, head coach Alexander Straus is still without long-term absentees Lena Oberdorf (cruciate ligament), Katharina Naschenweng (knee) and Franziska Kett (ankle). Sydney Lohmann and Jovana Damnjanovic and Sam Kerr have returned to training following their time out injured, but all are still doubtful for on Sunday. There is good news though concerning Lea Schüller: the striker is back in the squad following her collision in the Freiburg game.

Pre-match quotes

Alexander Straus: "As a promoted team, Jena are doing really well, especially against the big teams. They don't concede many goals and their games are often close. Even though they might not have that many points, I still think it will be very difficult to break them down. We have to be very focused again and take this game just as seriously as any other. We respect every one of our opponents."

Linda Sembrant: "Our team is quite young, but also has a lot of experience. I think we're on a very good path. We've made a good start to this season, both in the Champions League and the domestic league, and are continuing to develop. It's about working hard every week and every day - and that's exactly what we're doing. I think it's important to never be satisfied, to keep working and to look ahead. Now we're looking ahead to Jena and are aiming to get the three points."
