Facts ahead of Bayern vs. Union Berlin in the Bundesliga

Bayern’s attack is running as smooth as ever, with 29 goals scored after eight matchdays of a season equalling the Bundesliga record that FCB set in 1976/77 and then again in 2021/22. Now Vincent Kompany’s men host the second-meanest defence in the division, with Union Berlin conceding only five goals so far. Here are even more key stats ahead of Saturday’s Matchday 9 meeting at the Allianz Arena.

Unbeaten against Union

Bayern won 5-1 in Berlin the last time they faced Union, with Mathys Tel on the scoresheet.

Bayern have faced Union 10 times in the Bundesliga and are yet to lose (W7, D3). The only other team FCB have faced as often in the top flight without tasting defeat is Darmstadt (also 10). The Bavarians have scored in every fixture so far against the Berliners, averaging 2.5 goals per game (25 to Union’s seven). Conversely, the only team the capital have faced more than twice in the Bundesliga without getting a win is Bayern.

Kompany mixing it with greats

Kompany is yet to lose a game in the Bundesliga as a coach. The last Bayern boss to go so long without a league defeat at the start of his tenure in charge was Carlo Ancelotti in 2016. They both earned 20 points from their first eight matches at the helm. Only Otto Rehhagel (21 in 1995) and Ottmar Hitzfeld (22 in 1998) have picked up more.

Defence also falling into line

Bayern have kept four clean sheets in their eight league outings this season, while the wins over Stuttgart (4-0) and Bochum (5-0) mean the Reds have managed back-to-back shutouts for the first time in a year. The team last enjoyed a long run without conceding between February and May 2020 (three games). Bayern have also allowed opponents the fewest shots (15) and clear-cut chances (10) in the division.

Home backing

Bayern are yet to lose at home in 2024/25 and have been beaten in just one of the last 15 competitive fixtures at the Allianz Arena stretching back to last season. That was against Borussia Dortmund in March (2-0; otherwise W12, D2).

Yet more records for Kane

Harry Kane’s goal away at Bochum last weekend took him up to 45 in only 40 Bundesliga appearances, which is a new record. The England captain has been on the scoresheet in 28 games, which is the most of any player in their first 40 outings in the German top flight. The Bayern man leads the division alongside Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush for combined goals and assists (13, both nine goals and four assists). In the past 20 years, only two players have had a direct hand in more at this early stage of a season (15 by Robert Lewandowski in 2020/21 and Serhou Guirassy last term).

King to strike again?

Kingsley Coman has scored in two straight Bundesliga games for the first time since October 2023. Only once before has he done so in three consecutive outings in Germany’s top flight. The third game on that occasion in February 2023 was against Union, where Bayern won 3-0. Will history repeat itself here? Coman certainly enjoys facing the Berlin club, scoring three and providing an assist in his last five appearances against Union.
