Bayern with momentum, Gladbach in a slump: how things look ahead of the clash

There was a momentary hush in the away block in the Leipzig Arena. When Yussuf Poulsen equalised for Leipzig in stoppage time to draw the game at 3-3, it temporarily silenced the Bayern fans. The Munich side had already put themselves in the mood to celebrate the title with a spirited comeback - from 2-0 down at the break to leading 3-2. However, what initially seemed like a bit of a dampener ultimately turned out to be a mere cosmetic result: Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg the following day, which meant FC Bayern could no longer mathematically be caught and the 34th league title was theirs! For the fourth time after 1989, 2015 and 2021, the men from Munich celebrated it as the so-called "couch champions".

Following Saturday's Bundesliga home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (18:30 CEST), FC Bayern will now be presented with the Meisterschale on their home turf. fcbayern.com has put together some exciting facts for you ahead of the home finale.

Championship-winning coach Kompany

At the age of 39, Vincent Kompany  will go down in history as the club's third-youngest championship-winning coach - only Julian Nagelsmann (34) and Udo Lattek (37) were younger when they managed it. The Belgian is also the fifth coach in the new millennium to lead FCB to the title in his first Bundesliga season - after Louis van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Hansi Flick.

Historic run against the Foals

FC Bayern recently won three Bundesliga games in a row against Borussia Mönchengladbach for the first time in over ten years - the last time this happened was in 2014. Bayern's only longer winning streak against the Foals came in the early days of the Bundesliga: five consecutive victories between 1965 and 1967.

But watch out: No other club has beaten FCB in the Bundesliga as often as the Borussians - a whopping 28 times. So this is a real historic fixture in which neither side gives any quarter.

Dominant from start to finish

With their 34th league title, FCB are once again the benchmark. This season, the men from Munich have ended 32 out of 34 matchdays at the top of the table - the last time they achieved this was in the 2012/13 treble-winning season under Jupp Heynckes. Rather fittingly, the iconic coach celebrates his 80th birthday on 9 May (click here for our series).

The consistency is also remarkable: just two defeats in the first 32 Bundesliga games (23 wins, seven draws) - the last time that happened was in 2016/17 under Carlo Ancelotti.

Olise makes a historic start

Michael Olise is in superb form - and well on the way to making a name for himself in the Bundesliga. With 13 assists, the French winger has been the best provider this season so far. He's also scored ten goals - making him the first player since detailed data recording began (2004/05) to reach double figures for both goals and assists in his maiden season at FC Bayern. Just like Gladbach striker Tim Kleindienst (16 goals, seven assists), Olise has 23 direct goal contributions to his name - only Harry Kane (31) has surpassed him in the league.

Set-piece champions

With 22 goals from dead-ball situations, FC Bayern also lead the way in the league concerning set pieces, whereby the focus is particularly on headers. Both the record champions and Borussia Mönchengladbach have each scored 13 goals with the head - more than any other Bundesliga team. Both are also out in front in terms of headers on target: Bayern with 41, Gladbach with 36.

Fun fact: While FCB excel in attack, Gladbach have defensive problems at set pieces - most recently, in the 4-4 draw against Hoffenheim, all four goals came from dead-ball situations. The Foals have conceded a total of 20 goals from corners, throw-ins and free-kicks - only Kiel and Bochum (21 each) have a worse record.

Gladbach in a slump

Borussia Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, travel to the Arena in Fröttmaning with some issues. For the first time in this Bundesliga season, the team has gone five consecutive games without a win (two draws, three defeats). Only VfL Wolfsburg picked up fewer points in the same period. What's particularly alarming is that no other team has conceded as many goals in the last five games as the side from the Rhine valley (14).

So the situation is quite clear: Bayern will welcome the Foals as the newly crowned champions and favourites - but with maximum motivation to make the home finale a success. Everyone involved will also do their best to give club legend Thomas Müller - who could make his 750th competitive appearance for FC Bayern against Gladbach - a fitting farewell from the Allianz Arena.
