Atalanta post-match reaction - Harry Kane: 'We fear no one'

FC Bayern made it five wins on the bounce in the Champions League on Wednesday night with another comfortable victory over Atalanta, winning 4-1 to seal their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition. Vincent Kompany’s men again shone with some brilliant goals – and celebrated the debuts of two youngsters. “Great credit to the boys and their motivation,” said brace scorer Harry Kane, adding: “Some of the young players made their debut today, which was great.”

See what else Kane, Kompany, Jonas Urbig and Co had to say on the match and next opponents Real Madrid.

Reaction to match against Atalanta

Jan-Christian Dreesen (CEO): “It was an absolutely professional performance tonight. The team showed that they take every match seriously. Everyone noticed that they wanted to win convincingly. Credit goes to Vincent Kompany for that. They impressed again today, which breeds confidence for the next matches. It’s great that Vincent also brought on the two young players. We have a lot of potential, we’re doing good work in the academy.

“FC Bayern versus Real Madrid is an epic clash. We’ll see what happens. We’ve gone out to them in the recent knockout meetings, often in unfortunate circumstances. It’s time to change that and get to the semi-finals. The players are really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to two exciting matches – it’s good that the first leg is in Madrid. There are no favourites, it will come down to the performance on the night and you probably also need a bit of luck. For now we hope that everyone comes back fit from the international break.”

Vincent Kompany: “I’m always proud of what the boys produce – the performance, the goals but above all the energy too. It’s not that easy to into a game in this situation and still give everything. We also want to put on a show for the fans. Overall today was a very positive day for the club. It’s not easy for a young player to get minutes at FC Bayern, so I hope they enjoy these moments. These are boys who have been training with us for a while – Filip Pavić almost for a year, for example, even though he’s so young. Eventually the opportunity comes and it’s nice to see how they take it. Lenny Karl is already a bit further on and has shown with his performances that he has that experience. The others now need to keep working hard in training and learning from these moments.

“What Harry did for the goal is just extraordinary. Obviously I’m also happy when he scores the simple goals because they’re important for the consistency. But actions like that are special. He’s just come back from an injury and you see straight away how important he is for us.

“When you play against Real Madrid, everything is big – for both clubs. It doesn’t matter which is the better team at the moment. The history of these clubs is massive, and the quality on the pitch will be something special. With Real it’s often the case that the higher the level, the better they become. Therefore I’m expecting an absolutely top-quality clash. We want to give the fans – including the neutrals – a great game and obviously come out on top. No matter who we play: when we press high, everyone has to join in. That’s key. At the same time, we can also defend tightly and stay calm. Against such opponents you need players with confidence – and we have this confidence.”

Harry Kane: “The most important thing is just that we won the game. When you go into a match with a lead like we did, there’s somethimes the danger of becoming a bit complacent. But we said before the game that we wanted to approach this one in exactly the same way and win like the first leg, so great credit to the boys and their motivation. In a game like this, it’s sometimes actually more difficult to be fully switched on from the start, but we were there from minute one to minute 95. Some of the young players made their debut today, which was great. Overall it’s been a really strong knockout performance by us.

“Of course the next match is going to be tough. When you play against Real Madrid in the Champions League, you always have to expect tough opposition. You have to be ready for a fight and to play in a certain way. But we will be ready. We fear no one. We know it’ll be tough but with the confidence from this match and from the season so far, we just have to continue this way.”

Jonas Urbig: “It’s obviously been a different week to normal. Because of the concussion, I had to do everything step by step and follow the protocol. That’s important too. I then made the decision for myself that I could play today. It was possible according to the protocol, and I had a good feeling after the final training yesterday. It’s part of our game that we often keep the opponents deep in their own half. That also results in counter situations, though, where our defensive line is very high. In that situation I had to intervene and keep the ball. Obviously it’s still annoying when you concede a goal, especially from a corner. But we scored 10 goals over the two games, so you have to put that into perspective to a degree.”

Tom Bischof: “It’s not always easy to keep the focus high in a game like this, but I think we did that really well. The coach made it clear to us that we had to give 100 percent, which I think we showed on the pitch. We then added the important goals in the second half and put the result beyond doubt. Harry’s second goal was awesome. I think I was one of the first to go over to him and I said: ‘Go to the fans, celebrate that!’ At first I thought he was going to lay the balll off, but then he does the turn – and he can just shoot. He’s proven that again. Deniz Ofli initiated the third goal straight away – that was brilliant. And I believe Filip Pavić is Bayern’s youngest player in the Champions League. We all congratulated him. It just shows that the coach trusts us and rewards performances in training. We’re all delighted that more and more youngsters are getting their chances. The match against Real Madrid will obviously be special. Everyone’s really up for it. We don’t fear anyone. I think it’s going to be a great battle.”

Reaction from Atalanta

Raffaele Palladino (coach): “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved on our journey. We played against a very strong team and we’ve gained a lot of experiences. The level was very high in both games. We hope we were able to give the fans something back for their support despite the defeat.”
