England, led by Harry Kane, have missed out on a place in the World Cup final after conceding two late goals and losing 2-1 (0–0) to Argentina on Wednesday evening in Atlanta. Following Anthony Gordon’s opener in the 55th minute, the Three Lions sat too deep and just couldn't find an outlet to relieve the pressure of what was a constant battering from the South Americans. Enzo Fernández equalised with a long-range thunderbolt in the 85th minute, before Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner in stoppage time (90'+2).
“We played well for long stretches of the game. When we went 1–0 up, it looked as though we were just trying to hold on to the lead, and that’s just not enough at this level,” explained a disappointed Kane after the final whistle: “I’m just gutted because we’ve worked so hard to get here. The lads gave it their all – every step, every drop of sweat, blood and tears. To come so close and fail, as we did today, is simply devastating.”

Third-place play-off against Olise & Upamecano
As Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise had also been knocked out in the semi-finals with France the previous day, it means that, for the first time since the 1978 World Cup, no FC Bayern player will feature in the World Cup final. The three FCB teammates will now face each other on Saturday evening (23:00 CEST) in the third-place play-off in Miami.
