Reaction to Franz Beckenbauer Supercup – Harry Kane: ‘Important win to start season’
Bayern have their first trophy of 2026/27 in the bag after Vincent Kompany’s men beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Signal Iduna Park to lift the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. “It was an important win to start the season, especially away at Borussia Dortmund. It was a good way to start,” said Harry Kane afterwards. Coach Kompany echoed those thoughts while also looking ahead to what’s to come: “You saw the heart and character of the team. We’re pleased and happy today, but tomorrow we’re hungry again.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction from Dortmund.
Reaction to Franz Beckenbauer Supercup at Borussia Dortmund

Vincent Kompany: “It was a very good first half. We also showed a lot of determination in the second half. You saw the heart and character of the team. Some of the guys had only trained a few times and played 90 minutes today – that’s impressive. The most important thing is the mentality, and that was spot on. We won today. From tomorrow focus turns to the next game. We’re pleased and happy today, but tomorrow we’re hungry again.”

Manuel Neuer: “It definitely feels good. I think the whole Bundesliga looks at what the champions do against the cup winners. We ended up as double winners so played against the second-best team in Germany. It’s always a good way to start the season. You then know roughly where you stand. It was another hard fight and we had to give our all to win this game. But I think the better team won today. When there’s been a World Cup and players don’t all start pre-season at the same time, it’s not easy for a team. We’re making the best of it and trying to include young players as well. That worked really well in pre-season. I think we’re well prepared for the coming season.”
Harry Kane: “It was an important win to start the season, especially away at Borussia Dortmund. It was a good way to start. We had a few chances to put the game to bed. We didn’t manage it, so it remained at 2-0 despite our dominance. That’s always a dangerous result, because things can get tight again. That’s what then happened, but in the end we’re pleased it was enough.”

Jonathan Tah: “A title always means a lot. We worked to compete for the chance at the end of last season. Ultimately it’s about winning the game, which we did. We showed that we’ll keep going, that we’re hungry and will leave our best on the pitch.”

Nathaniel Brown: “I personally didn’t make the best start to the game. The goal helped me a bit, and now I’m really happy. When you score a goal, you’re kind of in a tunnel. It’s just feelings of happiness. We want to keep going like this, win games and win titles.”
Reaction from Borussia Dortmund
Niko Kovač (head coach): “We made a decent start to the game. We then allowed Bayern to grow through our own mistakes and had to defend a lot. The second goal in added time before half-time was annoying, from our own throw. That was sort of the thing that annoyed me. At 1-0 down in our stadium we have the chance to come back. So, that annoyed me a lot, because we had the ball.”
Gregor Kobel (goalkeeper): “Bayern played very well, definitely could’ve done more. But it’s a shame in the end, because we had chances and applied more pressure, but the result is fair. We saw good things from us at times but also that some of the guys aren’t fully up to speed yet. That’s normal in our situation, but in the end we need to win games like this because we want to. We could’ve got more out of it.”
Joey Veerman (midfielder): “It was special to play for Borussia Dortmund. I’m very proud. Today was a special day for me. We played a good second half and actually should’ve made it 2-2 late on. We want to play for titles, and I want to be a part of that.”
