Bayern with no reason to let up for Celtic second leg with last-16 spot on the line

Just six days on from claiming a 2-1 first-leg advantage in Scotland, Bayern now welcome Celtic to the Allianz Arena for the return fixture of their Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday (kick-off at 9pm CET, live coverage on fcbayern.com and in the FC Bayern app with our text commentary and free web radio). With an away win in the first leg, an impressive record at home in the Champions League and the fans behind the team, there’s a lot that points to Bayern progressing on Tuesday. That’s exactly why Vincent Kompany warned his team not to be too sure of themselves. “I’ve watched lots of Celtic’s games. They’ve done very well in the Champions League and can always be a threat,” our head coach said at his pre-match press conference. However, he’s unlikely to opt for a defensive approach, like his side did in Saturday’s goalless draw at Bayer Leverkusen, to see the tie through. According to the Belgian, some teams earn the fight to force Bayern back deep, “but at the end of the day our goal is to win, and also to win how we want to win. That’ll never change.”

The only time Bayern have failed to progress after winning the first leg away from home in the Champions League was in the 2010/11 last 16 against Inter Milan. The other 27 such occasions have all ended in passage to the next round. Bayern have also won their last seven competitive matches at the Allianz Arena and finished the league phase with a perfect record at home. Those positive experiences should give the team confidence for this second leg. “When results are right, you have that little extra strength, and that should help us tomorrow,” Kompany stated.

Celtic proved in the first leg last week that they are not easy to beat. After failing to have a shot in the first half, they stepped things up in the second (9-5 for shots) and even came close to an equaliser. It was a warning to Bayern that this tie is not over. “We need to be 100 percent at it, can’t let up, need to start well, and then hope we win it,” said Jamal Musiala.

Celtic will need to make history, though, if they’re to turn this tie around in Munich. The 54-time champions of Scotland have never won in 15 European games away at German clubs (D3, L12), while they have only ever won twice on the road in the Champions League in 43 attempts (D6, L35), with the last coming at Anderlecht in September 2017 (3-0). “We’re aware of the scale of the challenge, but we want to give the best we’ve got,” said Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Team news

Bayern remain without goalkeeper Daniel Peretz due to a kidney issue. Harry Kane sat out final training, but his involvement is likely not in doubt, with Kompany confirming that “it’s nothing bad, we just didn’t have long to recover”. However, João Palhinha and Alphonso Davies, who have been out lately with illness and a hamstring injury respectively, did train on Monday.

The visitors come to Munich without Paulo Bernardo (ankle) and Alistair Johnston (foot).
