FC Bayern Women were held to a 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in their final away game of the Bundesliga season. Alexander Straus’s team created chances but were unable to break the deadlock that would have secured them the title.
Chance to wrap it up against Potsdam
Bayern now hold a five-point lead at the top of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga ahead of Wolfsburg, who are away at Meppen on Sunday. If the Wolves win there, then FCB will have the chance to win their fifth title when they host Turbine Potsdam on the final day next Sunday.
Straus sticks with his side
Straus opted to field the same team that started last Friday’s 1-0 win over Hoffenheim. The 47-year-old was also still without Linda Dallmann (ankle), Giulia Gwinn (cruciate ligament), Franziska Kett (shoulder) and Tainara (muscular).
Even first half
It was an entertaining affair from the off at the Ulreich-Haberland-Stadion as both teams went for it. Bayern had more of the ball, but the first big chance came from the hosts as Maria Luisa Grohs produced an excellent stop to deny Kristin Kögel from Sylwia Matysiak’s cross. FCB didn’t let that put them off, however, as they started to settle into the Leverkusen half.
The visitors then carved out their first good chance on 32 minutes when Lea Schüller climbed highest to meet a Klara Bühl cross from the left, but her header went just over Anna Klink’s goal. Six minutes later, it was Sydney Lohmann who connected with a Carolin Simon free-kick. This time Klink was forced into action and made a good save to keep things level at the break.
No goals in the second half
Bayern dominated proceedings after the restart and had their next chance in the 55th minute when Lohmann again got on the end of a cross, this time from Maximiliane Rall, but was unable to turn it on goal. Die Frauen came closer again in the 74th minute when substitute Jovana Damnjanovic found Schüller in the six-yard box, who fired narrowly wide. Bayern continued to push for the goal that would bring them the title, but Leverkusen held firm. And when Schüller’s header in added time struck the post, they knew it wasn’t going to be their day.
Final game and chance against Potsdam
Bayern host Potsdam on the final day of the season on Sunday, 28 May at the FC Bayern Campus. A 20th win of the campaign against the team already relegated will secure the title.
