Georgia Stanway has signed a contract extension with FC Bayern Women and will now stay in Munich until at least 2026. The 24-year-old England midfielder, who won the European Championship in 2022 and was a runner-up at this year’s World Cup, first came to Bayern in summer 2022 and has scored 10 goals in 37 competitive appearances for the club.
Stanway: “I see my future here”
Stanway is one of Bayern’s three captains this season alongside Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir and Sarah Zadrazil, having settled in perfectly after a year in Germany. “It feels like home here for me, which is very important for me. This here is the best place for me, and I see my future here. The chance to extend at Bayern, and the fact the club also wants to, is a great honour,” the England international said.
“I’m very driven”
Stanway always leads by example with her drive and performances. “As a footballer and professional sportsperson, you’re here to assert yourself, and we as a team are here to win. I think that’s a given. I’m very driven and will do everything I can to help the team, both on and off the pitch.”
More titles the goal
Having won the Bundesliga last season, the Barrow-in-Furness native wants more silverware in Germany: “My favourite moment of last season was definitely winning the title. The week before the final league game was definitely the longest week ever. And then to finally play against Potsdam and then score a goal in the first minute – it was a great feeling. Holding the trophy aloft at the end was something special. When you get a taste for it, you definitely want it more.”
Rech: “She’s a key performer”
Bianca Rech, head of women’s football at Bayern, is delighted that Stanway is continuing at the club: “Georgia’s contract extension is very important for us. We approached her with it very early. Georgia had a great season, she’s a key performer in our team but also still so young. We can definitely expect much more from her in the future. I’m really delighted that we’ve been able to tie Georgia down with us long term.”
Straus: “We believe in Georgia”
Head coach Alexander Straus added: “Georgia is still young and will be even more important for our team than she already is. She grew into a leader’s role in our team over the last year. I think everyone could see how important she was for us. We believe in Georgia, and I’m pleased that Georgia also believes in our team and our plan.”
