Will the UCL streak continue? Bayern away to Atlético

For the last time this calendar year, FC Bayern are making a trip abroad! Bayern visit Atlético Madrid on Tuesday evening (follow the action on fcbayern.com from 9 pm CET with our live text commentary) for Matchday 5 of the 2020/21 Champions League group stage. Aside from those injured, head coach Hansi Flick will be without Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso. FC Bayern: the state of play

For months FC Bayern have been causing a stir in the Champions League! Last Wednesday, the men from Munich added a 15th straight UCL win to their record run courtesy of a 3-1 success over Salzburg. With the three points that accompanied that result, Bayern booked their place in the last 16 and secured top spot in the group well ahead of schedule. In the Bundesliga, the team beat VfB Stuttgart 3-1 on Saturday. "We're not winning any prizes for beautiful football at the moment, but the team has been able to fight for 90 minutes. And all that without much time to prepare. We're satisfied with what we've achieved and are in a good position. But there are still important games ahead of us in the next two and a half weeks," said head coach Flick on Monday at the pre-match press conference.

The opposition: Atlético Madrid

With two group matches still to play, Atlético are second in Group A behind Bayern. Coach Diego Simeone's team have five points, one ahead of third-placed Lokomotiv Moscow. To keep their fate in their own hands, the men from Madrid will need to win against FCB. In La Liga, Atlético have been impressive this season. The team have collected 23 points from nine matches so far, winning six games in a row, and are second behind Real Sociedad (top on 24 points), who have played two games more. "Atlético are one of the best teams in the world. Simeone is one of the best coaches in the world. They are extra motivated and will give 200%," said Javi Martínez before the match in the Spanish capital.

Team news:

"Lewandowski, Neuer, Goretzka and Tolisso are staying in Munich“, FCB coach Flick announced on Monday. Also missing from Madrid are Joshua Kimmich (post-op on a knee injury), Alphonso Davies (post-op after ligament damage), Marc Roca (suspended) and Tanguy Nianzou (not registered). Alexander Nübel will be in goal on Tuesday. "He's made a good impression and shows his quality in training. He has already done that in the DFB cup," said Flick. From the reserve side, goalkeeper Lukas Schneller, defender Bright Arrey-Mbi as well as midfielders Angelo Stiller and Maximilian Zaiser are promoted to the squad and will travel to Madrid.

Atlético, meanwhile, are without their two top strikers, Luis Suárez, who's tested positive for coronavirus, and Diego Costa. Lucas Torreira, Sime Vrsaljko and Manu Sánchez are also missing.

Hansi Flick: "We're looking forward to the game. They have the best defence and second best attack in La Liga. Add that to a coach who has done an outstanding job over the last few years and who always raises his team to another level. It is a great pleasure to play there."

Diego Simeone (Atlético Madrid head coach): "We're playing FC Bayern, an excellent, very strong team. But we don't have much wiggle room, we have to win."

The Referee: Clément Turpin

Clément Turpin will be in charge of the match on Tuesday evening. The French referee was the man in the middle in December 2016 for Bayern's clash against Atlético, with the Munich team winning 1-0 at their Allianz Arena home. The record champions have good memories of the Frenchman of late: he took charge of the 7-2 win away at Tottenham Hotspur in early October 2019 and the 3-0 win at Chelsea at the end of February this year. The 38-year-old referee will be assisted by his compatriots Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore. François Letexier and Jérôme Brisard will act as video assistant referees.

Top fact of the game

With their 15th consecutive victory in the Champions League, FC Bayern not only improved on the best-ever run in the Champions League, but also matched the record set in the Europa League, held by Atlético Madrid of all teams. Now the Munich team could better the record in a clash against the men who hold it.
