Champions League blockbuster against City: 'Need a complete performance'

The whole football world is looking forward to this one! On Tuesday night, FC Bayern travel to Manchester City (live text and free Web Radio commentary from 21:00 CEST on fcbayern.com and in the FC Bayern app) in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. The Munich men are looking to put themselves in a good position for the second leg at home at the Allianz Arena on 19 April. "We need a good team performance. Everyone must have a good day. All of us are highly motivated. It's a match that could also be the final," commented board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić before the flight to north-west England. Everything you need to know on the clash with the Cityzens is in the preview.

The best photos from the day before the meeting with Man City:

The state of play for Bayern

With a perfect record of eight wins from eight games so far in the Champions League this season, Bayern can head to Manchester City with confidence. The Munich defence has particularly impressed in Europe, registering seven clean sheet. "The team have every right to be confident. We need to build on the results from the Champions League," said FCB coach Thomas Tuchel at the pre-match press conference on Monday evening. To maintain that winning run against City, a "complete performance" is required. "We'll only be able to solve it as a unit, with hard work and willingness. It's not just a technical and tactical matter," added Tuchel. "We have to be at our best tomorrow," said centre-back Matthijs de Ligt at the press conference. "We've very motivated - I can't wait!"

In the build-up to the first leg against Man City, Matthijs de Ligt and Kingsley Coman gave their thoughts:

The opponents: Manchester City

Manchester City are undoubtedly one of the top favourites for the Champions League title. The team, coached by ex-Bayern boss Pep Guardiola, is bristling with world-class stars. One of them is striker Erling Haaland, who has scored a whopping 44 goals in 38 competitive appearances this season. After four wins and two draws in the group stage, the Sky Blues qualified for the last 16 comfortably as winners ahead of Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla FC and FC Copenhagen. They then knocked out another Bundesliga side in RB Leipzig. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Leipzig, City really showed their class in a 7-0 thrashing of RB at home.

Guardiola's men come into this game in top form, too, having won their last eight in all competitions. They warmed up for the Bayern match with a 4-1 victory at Southampton on Saturday. "It's a match between two very good sides. The details will be the difference. We know we're coming up against very good opponents," said centre-back Rúben Dias. "We'll do our best to be ready. I think our ambition will be the key."

The team news for Man City vs. Bayern

Along with long-term absentees Lucas Hernández and Manuel Neuer, striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is also absent due to a knee joint problem. Mathys Tel, who returned to full training on Easter Sunday, has made the trip to Manchester.

Manchester City are without Phil Foden following an appendix operation. Otherwise the Premier League champions are at full strength, including Haaland, who's fully fit again after recent adductor problems and scored two goals against Southampton on Saturday.

Here are the facts on the match:

What the coaches say

The anticipation is huge, the task is huge. This is the benchmark we want to measure ourselves by. I'm sure there'll be moments that we have to withstand, but we also want to have moments where we play and hurt them. We have the quality and talent in the squad.

Thomas Tuchel

In this competition you have to be there at the crucial moment. It's not about the form in the Premier League or the FA Cup. You have to be perfect in the 95 minutes and produce an outstanding performance.

Pep Guardiola
