Where there's a will, there's a way, Jamal Musiala must have thought when he took a pop at goal after a good quarter of an hour in the first game of the year against TSG Hoffenheim (3-0): From a tight angle, it looked like there was no way through, but the youngster found exactly the right channel to fire the ball past TSG keeper Oliver Baumann, off the inside of the far post and into the net to make it 1-0. It also amazed the German record champions' supporters, who voted the fleet-footed attacker their FC Bayern Goalscorer of the Month for January 2024.
37 per cent of the vote for Musiala
Musiala's opening salvo of the new calendar year received 37.2 per cent of the votes cast in the fan poll. He beat Alphonso Davies' long-range effort (23.6 per cent) to make it 2-0 at FC Augsburg (3-2) and Raphaël Guerreiro's winner scored with the outside of the foot (19.2 per cent) in the delayed match against Union Berlin (1-0).
Musiala ends Kane's run
With the award in January, the 20-year-old artistic dribbler brought to an end Harry Kane's run of topping the poll in each of the previous three months. Musiala himself had last triumphed in the voting in May with his goal that clinched the Bundesliga title at 1. FC Köln, which was also later voted Goal of the Season.
Musiala combined brilliantly with Leroy Sané in the 3-0 win against TSG Hoffenheim at the start of the year:
