The facts why Bayern can look forward to Hamburg reunion

A historic fixture returns to the Bundesliga as Bayern face Hamburg for the first time since March 2018 following HSV’s seven-year top-flight absence. It’s a match that has seen plenty of action – and often a lot of goals – down the years, with Bayern’s 247 scored against Hamburg the most any team has managed against an opponent in the Bundesliga. fcbayern.com has all the key stats and facts ahead of Saturday’s long-awaited reunion of German football giants.

Memorable meetings in Munich

Bayern’s encounters with HSV at the Allianz Arena have been goal-filled affairs and most recently very one-sided. With an aggregate score of 51-3 in the last nine, it’s no surprise to know that Bayern have won them all. This weekend’s meeting will also evoke bad memories for HSV. The last time this fixture was played on a Saturday evening, Bayern won 9-2 in March 2013. That was the highest-scoring match in the Bundesliga since the start of the 90s, together with Schalke’s 7-4 win over Bayer Leverkusen in February 2006.

Things weren’t always so one-sided, though. Hamburg were the only club to win both their first two Bundesliga visits to the Allianz Arena after it opened in 2005. Their 2-1 victory there in March 2006 was in fact Bayern’s first league defeat at their new home. HSV were actually unbeaten in four meetings prior to the start of Bayern’s aforementioned impressive winning run in Munich, helped by a certain Vincent Kompany keeping things tight for the visitors in two games in 2008.

Record attack vs. goalless promoted team

Bayern’s attack has hit the ground running this season, equalling the club record with nine goals from the first two matchdays in the Bundesliga (previously set in 2020/21). The Bavarians have also scored at least twice in each of their last 16 home league fixtures, which is their best run for 40 years, when they did so in 17 straight games across 1984 and 1985.

It’s a stark contrast to Hamburg, who are the only team alongside Borussia Mönchengladbach yet to find the back of the net in the Bundesliga this season. The numbers also suggest that is unlikely to change in Munich, where Bayern have won their last three Bundesliga games without conceding – just like they’ve done in their four most recent meetings at home to HSV.

A magical trio

Michael Olise and Harry Kane currently top the Bundesliga scoring chart after two matchdays with three goals each, tied with Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy. New signing Luis Díaz is just behind with two, having scored in each of his first two Bundesliga appearances. Let’s take a closer look at the new terrific trio in Munich:

  • Olise has scored in the last six Bundesliga matches across multiple seasons – a run most recently seen at Bayern by Robert Lewandowski in 2021, who netted in 15 consecutive games. The only other players to have scored in six straight Bundesliga matches for Bayern as well as Lewandowski (three times) are Gerd Müller and Roy Makaay (both twice).
  • Should Díaz also scored against HSV, he’d be only the fourth new signing at Bayern to get a goal in each of his first three Bundesliga appearances, after Ruggiero Rizzitelli (1996), Luca Toni (2007) and Mario Mandžukić (2012).
  • Kane has scored a goal against all 19 team he’s so far faced in the Bundesliga. Only Miroslav Klose can top that, having scored against all 28 of his top-flight opponents in Germany. This will be Kane’s first encounter with HSV.
