Bara Ndiaye: From an academy in Gambia to the big stage with Bayern

Everything looked familiar at first glance in the FC Bayern dressing room on Saturday evening: jersey after jersey hung neatly on the hooks, everything prepared down to the last detail for the Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli. Michael Olise’s No. 17, Alphonso Davies’ No. 19, Tom Bischof’s No. 20 – well-known names, well-known numbers. But in between them, one shirt stood out that many FCB fans aren’t yet very familiar with: Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, number 39. A few hours later, this jersey featured not only in the changing room but also on the field.

Because when the fourth official held up the board in the 84th minute at the Millerntor-Stadion, the number 39 was lit up in green. Ndiaye came on for Jamal Musiala and celebrated his competitive debut for the FC Bayern first team. Without much fuss he slotted into the centre of midfield, demanding the ball, moving into space – there were no signs of nerves. Just a minute later, the fifth goal was scored by Raphaël Guerreiro, and Ndiaye was one of the first to congratulate and celebrate with him. For the 18-year-old, this brief moment on the pitch is the preliminary destination of a journey that started a long way from Hamburg.

From Gambia to Munich

Ndiaye is a central attacking midfielder who comes from Senegal – the homeland of players like Sadio Mané and Nicolas Jackson – and trained at the Gambinos Stars Africa academy in Gambia. Gambinos has collaborated since 2023 with Red&Gold Football, FC Bayern’s joint venture with Los Angeles FC for international talent development. Through this route the attacker moved on loan to Munich from Gambinos Stars Africa on a contract until 30 June 2026. “Bara is now the first [from Red&Gold Football] to really arrive at the top,” explained board member for sport Max Eberl following the transfer. “He just needs to adapt and get to know European football.”

Red&Gold Football as springboard

The partnership with Red&Gold Football opened the door to Europe for Ndiaye at an early age. In October 2024, he completed a two-week training camp in Munich with Gambinos Stars Africa, which included a friendly victory against FC Bayern’s U19 team at the Campus. This was followed in February and March 2025 by two months with the record champions’ reserve team and U19 squad, combined with his first training sessions with the pros. In the summer of 2025, he moved on to Grasshopper Club Zurich, where he completed a two-month trial and played in a friendly against FC Bayern. Gerald Scheiblehner, then head coach of Grasshoppers, was impressed: “He has many strengths, is agile, finds good solutions in tight spaces and has excellent speed. A very young player at a very high level who is training with us to get to know football in Europe.”

First steps in European football

The path to Munich has not been without setbacks, though. In September and October 2025, Bara Ndiaye returned to the Bayern first team for another trial but couldn’t train as planned because of an injury and only completed rehab sessions in Munich. Nevertheless, he wasn’t thrown off course. He was signed on loan for the second half of the 2025/26 season shortly after and has been a regular member of the first-team squad since then. What happens once the loan has expired will be decided between FC Bayern, the partner academy and the player in the summer.

Versatile and quick

On the field, Ndiaye brings exactly what’s needed in modern attacking play: versatility, agility, the ability to create opportunities in tight spaces – and exceptional pace to boot. At the FC Bayern Campus, he broke the speed record there with a measured speed of over 36 kilometers per hour. “We like his personality,” said coach Vincent Kompany, emphasising that the teenager has settled into his new environment quickly. “He’s shown that he’s one of the talents we have in Bayern’s youth system. Things are going well for him.”

Praise from Eberl and Kompany

Against this background, the moment at St. Pauli seems like a logical yet special step. From a partner academy in Gambia, through a training camp, stints at the Campus and in Zurich to the substitution in a 5-0 win in the Bundesliga – Bara Ndiaye has earned his first minutes in a Bayern shirt step by step. Eberl was therefore pleased about the debut: “He got into the game very well. You couldn’t detect any nervousness in him.” Among all the famous names in the dressing room, the number 39 introduced himself impressively – as a talent who will be watched closely at FC Bayern in the coming years.
